Karan Johar Plans New Celebrity Chat Show After ‘Koffee With Karan’ Finale

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karan Johar has announced plans for a new celebrity chat show as he prepares to conclude the ninth season of ‘Koffee with Karan’. At 54, the filmmaker is reportedly creating an original concept under his production banner, which will allow his organisation to retain rights to the new format. While no formal announcement has been made regarding this upcoming show, the intention to shift away from an established property suggests a significant change in direction for Johar.

The decision to end ‘Koffee with Karan’ is also reportedly motivated by Johar’s desire to focus more on filmmaking. This is coupled with the exploration of a fresh chat show format that his production house can own, as opposed to continuing with a long-standing series. However, details about the specific format of the new show are still not publicly known.

There has been speculation regarding the potential structure, platform, and launch timeline of the reported new series. Industry sources have noted a trend where new shows initially debut on YouTube, gather an audience, and later transition to streaming services. This could provide a pathway for Johar to establish a unique property while using digital platforms for audience engagement.

‘Koffee With Karan’ Final Season Details

In the same promotional clip, Johar addressed an unsolicited suggestion from a caller who remarked that the show should have ended a decade ago. Johar’s retort was direct: “Thank you for asking, but I haven’t invited you for eight seasons, so I don’t plan to invite you for the ninth.” Additionally, he tackled expectations regarding the guest list for the final season.

He notably clarified that cricketers would not be invited, referencing the controversy surrounding Hardik Pandya and K L Rahul’s appearance in 2019. Johar concluded the promo with a playful remark, stating, “Darling, it’s my last season of Koffee With Karan. Why would I do anything controversial?” This lighthearted comment underscored a long-standing approach to the series that has mixed entertainment with occasional controversy.

‘Koffee With Karan’ A Cultural Landmark

‘Koffee with Karan’ first aired in November 2004, establishing itself as Karan Johar’s flagship celebrity talk show. The series is well-known for its intimate couch-style format that blends celebrity gossip with industry discussions, producing confessional moments alongside segments like the “Rapid Fire Round”. Over its 22-year run, the show transitioned from traditional cable television to digital streaming, consistently generating headlines and public debates.

The show has been pivotal in shaping major conversations within the industry, including those around nepotism in Bollywood, making it one of the most recognisable celebrity talk show brands in Hindi entertainment. As the series prepares for its concluding season, viewers remain eager yet curious about the guest line-up, which has not been disclosed.

Season 9 of ‘Koffee with Karan’ is scheduled to commence streaming on JioHotstar from October 14, marking the end of a significant chapter in Indian television. The anticipation surrounding this final season reflects its longstanding impact on both audiences and the industry as a whole.
