S. Jaishankar Acknowledges India’s Involvement in Discussions to Resolve Ukraine Conflict

The CSR Journal Magazine

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently confirmed that India has progressed from merely advocating for peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict to actively engaging in dialogues with both nations. During his address at the Munich Leaders Meeting held in New Delhi on Sunday, Jaishankar stated that India has escalated its involvement through discussions aimed at ending the ongoing war. This represents a significant shift in India’s approach to the conflict.

Jaishankar noted, “We have been advocating for peace for many years, and in recent months we have become more involved beyond advocacy. We have conversations with both Russia and Ukraine in this regard.” He highlighted that India is focusing on aspects such as the safety of shipping in the Black Sea amid these ongoing discussions.

Details of the Ongoing Conversations

The External Affairs Minister elaborated on the subjects being addressed in these recent conversations, which include immediate concerns related to grain and energy exports, as well as measures to avoid military confrontations. This strategic dialogue reportedly reflects India’s intention to play a more significant role in mitigating the impacts of the war on adjacent nations and global supply chains.

Notably, Jaishankar’s remarks followed a statement by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha. Sybiha indicated that India’s proposal for a ceasefire stands out as the most detailed among four set before Ukraine, expressing Ukraine’s openness to a truce that encompasses considerations around energy infrastructure and Black Sea security.

The Ukrainian official stated, “We have four proposals. The most comprehensive is India’s proposal. For the first time, India has signalled its willingness to play a role,” as reported by RBC-Ukraine. This acknowledgment places India in a pivotal position concerning future negotiations.

India’s Diplomatic Initiatives and High-Level Engagements

Jaishankar did not specify the exact details of the peace initiative, but his comments suggest that India is concentrating on implementing practical strategies to reduce the immediate consequences of the conflict. The safety of commercial shipping and the secure transport of grain and energy resources from the Black Sea form a crucial part of these strategies.

This development signifies a shift from India’s previous stance, which primarily revolved around encouraging dialogue and diplomacy as a means to resolve the conflict. India has consistently maintained communication with both Russian and Ukrainian officials, emphasising its readiness to contribute to peaceful resolutions.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s engagements with leaders in both nations further underline India’s rationale. Modi’s discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy have also stressed the need to transition from “endless war” towards an “end of war.” These high-level discussions have reinforced India’s position as a potential mediator in the escalating crisis.

As the conflict, which began in February 2022, approaches its fifth year in 2027, the clash remains unresolved, with both Russia and Ukraine maintaining distant stances regarding peace negotiations. Recent efforts from India’s leadership reflect a growing intent to facilitate dialogue and possibly help in reaching a suitable resolution.
