Russian Missile Strike Kills 11 in Ukraine, Damages Historic Dormition Cathedral

The CSR Journal Magazine

Residents in Kyiv experienced a terrifying night as explosions and air raid sirens echoed throughout the city on June 15, 2026. Smoke engulfed the skyline following one of the largest aerial assaults launched by Russia against Ukraine to date. The attack reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and left many more injured across various Ukrainian regions.

Damage was reported in multiple areas, including the cities of Kharkiv and Dnipro, as the barrage struck civilian sites such as apartment buildings and shops. Ukrainian authorities have stated that 70 missiles and 611 drones were deployed in this extensive operation. Specifically, in Kyiv, five fatalities were confirmed, along with over 30 injuries, two of whom were young children aged five and six.

Prompt responses from emergency services followed the strikes, with several residential districts affected within mere minutes. A significant amount of destruction was recorded, including major damage to a high-rise apartment tower and fires ignited in a market and grocery store nearby.

Historic Cathedral Affected

Among the key targets during the assault was the Dormition Cathedral, situated within the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery complex, an important religious and cultural site in Ukraine. The roof of the cathedral was reportedly set ablaze, with images showing smoke billowing around the iconic golden domes as flames consumed parts of the structure.

This monastery, dating back to the 11th century, holds UNESCO World Heritage status and has long been considered a pivotal centre for Ukrainian spirituality. Metropolitan Epiphanius, the leader of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, condemned the attack, labelling it a crime against humanity, history, and Christianity.

Minister Yulia Svyrydenko expressed strong condemnation of the incident, describing the missile strikes as a brutal assault on both the people and cultural heritage of Ukraine. She remarked on social media about the attack’s implications for Russia’s claimed cultural values.

Accusations between Moscow and Kyiv

The Russian Defence Ministry stated that the missile strikes were aimed at significant military and industrial installations involved in the production of drones and missiles. Russian officials asserted that military recruitment centres and factories were targeted during the operation. They denied responsibility for the damage to the cathedral, suggesting that a Ukrainian Patriot air defence missile may have malfunctioned.

In response, Ukrainian authorities dismissed this claim and attributed the damage directly to Russian drones. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy labelled the attack as the largest crime against Christian heritage and culture initiated by Moscow to date.

This incident has occurred at a crucial juncture for Ukraine, as President Zelenskyy seeks to garner renewed international support at the next G7 summit. With growing global distractions and conflicts diverting attention, Kyiv is urging its allies to persist in providing military aid and to enhance air defence systems to safeguard against continued aggressions.
