BJP’s Dhruv Kumar Tripathi Regains Lead in Gorakhpur MLC Elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections have revealed a challenging scenario for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Gorakhpur, a region traditionally seen as a stronghold for the party and the residence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The contest has intensified as BJP’s incumbent MLC Dhruv Kumar Tripathi initially trailed.

But, he later regained a narrow lead over independent candidate Rajeev Yadav in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituency. The counting process has been marred by claims of irregularities from both the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the independent candidate. In total, 11 seats in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council were contested, with the BJP winning five and the Samajwadi Party securing four.

Notably, the SP’s victories include the Varanasi Teachers’ seat, which is part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency. Although MLC elections do not directly indicate the overall voter sentiment, the results are being closely monitored in the lead-up to the 2027 Assembly elections, making the situation in Gorakhpur particularly significant.

Counting Process and Allegations of Irregularities

The counting of first-preference votes in Gorakhpur saw Dhruv Tripathi receiving 11,881 votes, while Rajeev Yadav closely followed with 11,415 votes. The third position was held by the SP candidate, Dr Sanjayan Tripathi, who garnered 8,301 votes. Currently, the counting of second-preference votes is ongoing, with both Tripathi and Yadav in a tight race.

The counting process has experienced fluctuations, with Yadav initially maintaining a slight lead over Tripathi during the first two rounds. As the counting progressed, the independent candidate Yadav managed to extend his lead by over 370 votes by the end of the third round. However, a significant shift occurred during the fourth round of counting, allowing Tripathi to reclaim the lead. This unexpected turn has led to controversy surrounding the counting process.

The Samajwadi Party has decided to boycott the vote-counting process, alleging that the election observer showed bias towards the BJP candidate. Brijesh Gautam, the acting district president of the SP, has claimed that the Returning Officer (RO) did not provide candidates with round-wise counting charts, raising concerns about the transparency of the process. Gautam expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the refusal to share this information contravened established counting norms.

Implications for Future Elections

The developments in Gorakhpur’s MLC elections are being scrutinised as they may have implications for the political landscape in Uttar Pradesh. The close contest in a region known for its BJP allegiance has attracted significant attention, especially with the Assembly elections on the horizon. The results could provide insights into voter sentiment and party performance in the state.

While the BJP has managed to secure a majority of the contested seats thus far, the strong showing by the Samajwadi Party indicates a competitive political environment. The outcome in Gorakhpur, particularly, is being viewed as a potential indicator of challenges the ruling party may face in the upcoming elections.

As the counting continues and allegations of irregularities persist, the situation remains fluid. The final results will be pivotal not only for the candidates involved but also for the broader political dynamics in Uttar Pradesh as parties prepare for future electoral battles.
