Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has leveled serious accusations against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, claiming that her “Mamata” is extended only to individuals engaged in criminal activities and unlawful immigration. Speaking to a crowd during the ‘Parivartan Yatra’ in Howrah, Singh questioned the intent behind Banerjee’s governance, openly asking, “Mamata, for whom is your ‘Mamata’?” He expressed concern that criminals in West Bengal feel they are protected under her administration, suggesting that her loyalty lies with “criminals, illegal immigrants, and people of a particular religion.” Singh asserted that this perception has become entrenched among those involved in wrongdoing.
Critique of Law and Order Issues in the State
Singh further condemned the West Bengal government on various law enforcement issues, particularly citing a troubling increase in deaths while in police custody, which he labeled as a “means of taking revenge.” He criticized the perceived attacks on central investigative agencies, including the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), declaring that “there is no democracy in Bengal; in fact, there is a system of terrorism.” He expressed dismay over the lack of protective measures for investigators, stating that any legitimate government should not fear scrutiny from central agencies.
Questioning Governance and Accountability
The Defence Minister queried Banerjee’s approach to law enforcement, emphasizing that it is imperative for a Chief Minister to protect those who enforce the law rather than allow attacks on them. He contended, “If you are honest, why fear the ED and CBI? Why not assist them?” Singh highlighted ongoing incidents of violence against federal investigators, underscoring that these acts are detrimental to India’s legal framework and its constitutional integrity. He admonished that the increasing hostility towards investigative bodies is an attempt to suppress truth and accountability within the state.
Parivartan Yatra and Upcoming Political Landscape
The ‘Parivartan Yatra’ serves as a significant political movement ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. This campaign is expected to traverse over 5,000 kilometers and include a series of 63 major rallies alongside 282 smaller gatherings. The campaign will culminate in a substantial rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, featuring an address by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This initiative signifies the Bharatiya Janata Party’s aim to strengthen its foothold in the state while addressing critical issues that have emerged under the current government.
