Indian Railways has officially approved the development of a four-lane Road Over Bridge (ROB) on the Udhna-Ukai Songadh section of the Western Railway, with an estimated total expense of ₹133.2295 crore. The funding for this project will be shared equally with the state government, with each party contributing ₹66.6147 crore and ₹66.6148 crore, respectively. The construction aims to enhance road traffic flow and minimise disruptions to railway operations.

The ROB will feature a four-lane structure, with the railway bridge component consisting of an Open Web Girder (OWG) at a projected cost of ₹91.60 crore. This section is particularly challenging due to a 62 per cent skew angle at the crossing location, which adds complexity to the design and construction processes.

The viaduct portion will extend 311.58 metres and is estimated to cost ₹19.98 crore. Furthermore, the Railway Approach (RE) section will measure 524.32 metres, with an associated expenditure of ₹10.25 crore. The shared goal of the project is to facilitate smoother transportation and improve operational efficiency for both road and rail.

Benefits and Operational Improvements

The construction of this four-lane ROB is designed to ease traffic congestion at the intersection, ensuring that vehicular movement is not hindered by train schedules. This grade-separated infrastructure will support more effective train operations, thereby enhancing safety and reliability within the Udhna-Ukai Songadh railway segment. Overall, these improvements are expected to significantly benefit passengers through decreased delays and enhanced service quality.

Additionally, the upgrade aligns with broader objectives for railway expansion in India. By facilitating smoother transitions between road and rail, the project aims to promote better connectivity and efficiency for all transport options involved.

On September 9, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) previously approved three significant railway multitracking projects valued at ₹10,783 crore, aimed at expanding the Indian Railways network by approximately 656 km. These projects span across five states: West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

Impact on Connectivity and Local Communities

The new railway initiatives are expected to enhance connectivity for around 4,790 villages, benefitting a total population of approximately 56 lakh. By improving the rail infrastructure, the government aims to facilitate easier access to essential services, thus positively impacting local communities.

The particular projects approved by the CCEA include the Kharagpur-Jharsuguda (Bagdehi) fourth line, Katni-Pendra Road fourth line, and Bilaspur (Uslapur)-Pendra Road third line, impacting 14 districts across the involved states. The projects are slated for completion by the 2029-30 timeframe.

Furthermore, the expanded railway network is poised to enhance accessibility to various tourist and pilgrimage destinations, such as Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Amarkantak, and Achanakmar Tiger Reserve. These improvements are part of the government’s commitment under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which focuses on advancing multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency through integrated planning efforts.
