Railways Approves Recruitment of 4,098 Technical Personnel for Enhanced Safety

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Railway Ministry has sanctioned the recruitment of 4,098 technical personnel across various railway zones to bolster safety measures and enhance operational efficiency. This initiative aims to address critical vacancies that have been identified through the ministry’s internal Human Resource Management System.

An official circular has been disseminated to the general managers of all railway zones, outlining the decision to recruit personnel based on an assessment of vacancies raised by these zones. This assessment phase has played a pivotal role in the recruitment process that is now set to commence.

The recruitment will cover 35 essential technical categories, with positions critical for operations including junior engineers, depot material superintendents, and chemical and metallurgical assistants.

Vacancy Distribution Across Categories

Among the identified vacancies, the Permanent Way category has the most significant shortfall, comprising 845 positions. This is followed by 470 vacancies in the Works category and 450 in the Carriage and Wagon category, among others. The recruitment timeline has been fixed in coordination with the chairman of the Railway Recruitment Board in Bengaluru.

The zonal railways have received instructions to finalise their internal processes prior to updating the vacancy list in the Human Resource Management System. This process includes adherence to the established reservation norms for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), Other Backward Classes (OBC), and Economically Weaker Sections (EWS).

The initiation of this recruitment comes at a time when the ministry had previously approved the hiring of 6,565 technicians. This prior notification included openings for 323 posts designated for signal technician grade I and 6,242 posts for technician grade III, indicating an ongoing commitment to staff critical operational positions.

Reactions from Railway Unions

Alok Chandra Prakash, the general secretary of the Indian Railway S&T Maintainers Union, noted that the recruitment process was prompted by a nationwide protest from Signal and Telecom employees. He expressed satisfaction that the ministry acknowledged the protest and has moved to fill these long-standing vacancies in safety positions.

As part of the recruitment plan, the ministry’s circular has also mandated the hiring of 197 junior engineers in signal positions and 79 junior engineers in telecommunication roles. Prakash emphasised the importance of not only filling these posts but also creating new positions to keep pace with the expanding railway infrastructure.

The Railway Ministry’s latest decision thus encapsulates the recruitment of 4,098 technical vacancies across fundamental categories within the railway zones. The recruitment process will adhere to a designated timeline and comply with reservation policies, addressing significant operational and safety concerns within the organisation.
