Rahul Gandhi Responds to Elon Musk’s Claims About India’s Oligarchs

The CSR Journal Magazine

Elon Musk addressed the regulatory challenges faced by his satellite internet company, Starlink, by questioning whether Mukesh Ambani is the “real boss of India.” This inquiry came amid Musk’s increasing dissatisfaction with the obstacles hindering Starlink’s launch in the country. His remarks, made via social media platform X, suggested that certain oligarchs were obstructing his company’s entry, impeding its efforts to secure necessary approvals.

Musk’s comments stemmed from his belief that there is a deliberate effort to block Starlink’s operations despite the company being licensed in over 165 nations. He expressed frustration over the lengthy approval process, stating that Starlink had spent five years complying with Indian regulations. His posts highlighted a perceived disparity in prioritising oligarchs’ interests over those of the general public.

The Indian government promptly refuted Musk’s allegations, maintaining that the approval process was fair and transparent. Officials emphasised that all applicants, including Starlink, are currently awaiting obligatory security clearances.

Rahul Gandhi’s Response

In reaction to Musk’s statements, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi commented directly on X, implying a connection to industrialist Gautam Adani, though Gandhi did not name Adani explicitly. His message, “Welcome to India, Elon. Wait till you discover the other guy,” hinted at a broader issue regarding the perceived nexus between powerful business figures and political interests in the country.

This remark aligns with ongoing accusations by the Congress party regarding Adani’s close ties to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the alleged preferential treatment he receives from the government. Gandhi’s response has drawn attention to the intricate relationships among India’s leading business leaders and their influence on political matters.

Amidst this exchange, Musk’s posts reflected growing frustration with the Indian regulatory framework, calling out the monopolistic practices he claims are jeopardising Starlink’s entry. His assertion that “certain oligarchs” are maintaining these barriers raised questions about fairness and transparency in India’s business environment.

Government’s Stance on Allegations

Following the exchange between Musk and Gandhi, the Ministry of Communications issued a statement defending the integrity of its approval process. Officials categorically rejected Musk’s claims, labelling the notion that the system is unfair or discriminatory as “baseless and misconceived.” The ministry underscored that no specific company was being targeted, emphasising an unbiased approach to all applicants in the satellite internet sector.

Reportedly, the government has issued licenses to three companies, including Starlink, Jio Satcom, and Eutelsat OneWeb, enabling them to operate in the satellite internet domain. However, these firms remain unable to commence commercial operations pending essential security assessments and spectrum-related approvals.

The discussion surrounding Starlink and its operational challenges in India continues to evoke considerable attention, particularly concerning the broader implications for market competition and internet accessibility in underserved regions. The government’s commitment to a fair approval process suggests an effort to maintain a level playing field for all stakeholders in the industry.
