Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has raised concerns regarding the absence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah from Parliament, amidst ongoing controversy related to alleged police actions against student protesters. Gandhi has questioned what allegedly motivates Shah’s reluctance to explain his position in the House, asserting that his absence “reeks of guilt.” This statement was made in a post on social media platform X, highlighting the public’s growing unease regarding governmental accountability.

On July 30, Gandhi’s comments came shortly after he called for a high-powered committee, overseen by the Supreme Court, to investigate the alleged police brutality during a student protest that took place on July 20 at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. He stated that the students deserve justice and that an independent inquiry is mandatory, given the serious allegations of violence directed at peaceful demonstrators.

In a subsequent post, Gandhi shared a video, which allegedly shows police personnel using lathis against protestors during the event. Although the authenticity of this footage has not yet been independently verified by any agency, it adds to the already mounting scrutiny faced by the authorities for their handling of the protests.

Protests Inside Parliament Complex

The developments concerning the absence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah emerged on the same day opposition members staged protests at Makar Dwar within the Parliament complex. These protests were in response to both the alleged police misbehaviour towards student protesters and allegations of financial irregularities linked to donations at the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Temple in Ayodhya. Members from various parties under the INDIA bloc gathered around 10:30 am, holding placards and demanding accountability from the government.

Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain spoke out about the demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan regarding his department’s failure to address the controversy surrounding the police action. He urged that a detailed statement be made in Parliament concerning these allegations and called for an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hussain particularly emphasised that the Delhi Police operates under the Union Home Ministry, thus placing Shah in a position to respond to these pressing queries.

The protests reflect a growing opposition sentiment aimed at ensuring that government officials are held responsible for their actions, especially when it involves the rights of students and civil society. The atmosphere in Parliament has been charged, as members seek to confront the government over its alleged inaction regarding these serious allegations.

The protests and accusations coincide with the upcoming deliberations in the Rajya Sabha regarding the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026.
