Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has publicly denounced Prime Minister Narendra Modi in light of the government’s suggestion to levy a transaction fee on UPI transactions. In a video message shared on social media platform X, Gandhi accused Modi of essentially bowing down to US President Donald Trump, rather than standing firm for Indian taxpayers. He urged the Prime Minister to “have a spine” and rescind the proposed UPI tax.

In his critique, Gandhi referenced a historical quote from former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, highlighting her belief in standing straight and not leaning towards any side. He argued that Modi’s approach is vastly different, alleging that Modi has adopted a posture of submission rather than asserting India’s independence.

Gandhi’s message declared, “Modi ji, please stop lying down in front of the United States. Have a spine, stand up and take back the UPI tax.” He concluded by demanding the immediate withdrawal of the transaction fee, asserting that it unfairly burdens every Indian citizen.

Congress Leaders Join the Critique

KC Venugopal, a General Secretary within the Congress party, echoed Gandhi’s sentiments by labelling the newly proposed transaction fee as the “New Modi Tax.” He claimed that the taxation is a result of Prime Minister Modi’s perceived capitulation to US interests, calling attention to the burdens this places on common citizens.

Venugopal noted the introduction of the 0.4 per cent tax on UPI transactions as being a detrimental measure that adds to the financial struggles of the populace. He stated, “Every day they are giving punishment to the people of this country. Every day, common people are in great distress,” implying that the government’s policies are exacerbating existing hardships.

In the same vein, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned Modi’s government for allegedly yielding to US pressure regarding trade tariffs and digital transaction frameworks. Kharge’s comments were made in a social media post, wherein he emphasised the adverse impact on everyday citizens due to government actions. He remarked on the threats of increasing US tariffs, suggesting the government’s trade policies are failing Indian interests.

Concerns Over Digital Payment Policies

Kharge specifically addressed the government’s approach towards digital payment policies, criticising recent changes concerning the Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) for UPI transactions. He articulated his view that the alteration represents a capitulation to foreign influence and manifests a lack of resolve on the part of the Indian government.

In his remarks, Kharge referred to the government’s handling of multiple issues related to trade and immigration as indicative of a submissive stance. He cited the mounting pressures from Washington as an ongoing concern, highlighting the risks that such dynamics pose to India’s sovereignty and economic welfare.

The Congress leadership’s collective denunciation signifies a broader political critique of the Modi government’s engagement with international powers, especially concerning financial policies that affect the Indian populace directly. The party’s leaders are calling for a reassessment of the government’s actions to ensure the welfare of citizens is prioritized over foreign relations.
