Protesters Ignore Bihar Police’s Water Cannons at Tejashwi’s Raj Bhavan March

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent march led by Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of Opposition in Bihar and a prominent figure in the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), took an unexpected route on Wednesday as demonstrators marched towards the Raj Bhavan. The event, driven by concerns over the NEET paper leak and reports of violence against students in Siwan involving an AK-47, attracted a significant turnout of RJD supporters. Participants began their march from Gandhi Maidan, setting the scene for a demonstration aimed at highlighting pressing educational issues in the state.

As the march progressed to Dak Bungalow Chowk, police were seen erecting barricades to control the flow of protesters. Tensions rose as demonstrators engaged in a standoff with the authorities, with numerous individuals climbing onto the barricades while chanting slogans against the government’s handling of educational affairs. Reports allege that some supporters were encouraged via loudspeakers to attempt to breach the police lines, intensifying the atmosphere of the demonstration.

Police Response and Tejashwi’s Detention

In response to the escalating situation, law enforcement deployed significant manpower at Income Tax Chowk, where Tejashwi Yadav was ultimately taken into custody. Following his detention, a crowd of RJD supporters gathered around his vehicle, displaying their disapproval of the police action. Tejashwi addressed the protesters through a microphone, urging them to remain peaceful and to avoid provocation, which led to a partial withdrawal from the confrontation.

The initial attempt by protesters to break through the barricades was met with resistance, forcing them to retreat temporarily. However, they regrouped and managed to dismantle part of the barricade, allowing the procession to advance towards Income Tax Chowk once more. Tejashwi’s detention drew attention to the grievances expressed by the RJD, particularly regarding educational policies and safety concerns for students.

The situation remained charged as police utilised water cannons in an effort to control the crowd. Contrarily, many protesters responded to the spray with revelry, dancing in the midst of the water as a relief from the oppressive heat. This unexpected reaction highlighted the complex dynamics between the authorities and demonstrators, as some women allegedly requested the police to re-activate the water cannons, indicating a desire for respite from the hot weather.

Sustained Demonstration Amidst Tensions

Even after Tejashwi departed towards Raj Bhavan, the crowd at Income Tax Chowk continued to vocalise their discontent with the state government. Many RJD supporters lingering in the area persistently raised slogans, expressing their dissatisfaction with the ongoing issues surrounding education and student welfare. The protest illustrated not only the immediate demands of the demonstrators but also served as a broader commentary on the governance in Bihar.

Throughout the march, temperatures remained high, contributing to the challenging conditions for both the protesters and police forces. The reliance on water cannons became a focal point in the demonstration, showcasing an unusual interaction between law enforcement measures and public sentiment. As the standoff persisted, the march effectively brought attention to pressing socio-political issues needing resolution.

The events at Tejashwi Yadav’s march to the Raj Bhavan on August 19, 2026, exemplified the complexities of protest dynamics in Bihar, particularly concerning educational policies and the safety of students. The day concluded with a notable demonstration of community spirit amidst contention, as the RJD supporters remained steadfast in their demands for accountability and change.
