Prime Minister Modi Emphasizes Importance of Petroleum Sector for Self-Reliant India in Kerala

On March 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for multiple development projects valued at approximately Rs 10,800 crore during his visit to Ernakulum, Kerala. Among these initiatives is the establishment of a Polypropylene Unit at the Kochi Refinery, owned by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), with an investment exceeding Rs 5,500 crore. PM Modi stressed that expansion of the petroleum sector is crucial for achieving a self-reliant India, linking this objective directly to the initiatives under the Make in India campaign.

Polypropylene Unit Aims to Boost Manufacturing

While addressing the audience, PM Modi highlighted the significance of the new polypropylene unit, which is expected to produce around 400,000 tons of polypropylene each year. He indicated that this facility will bolster various industries, including packaging, textiles, automobiles, and medical devices. The Prime Minister pointed out that India’s rapid advancement in artificial intelligence and semiconductor technologies necessitates an increased demand for energy, particularly focusing on the development of green and clean energy solutions.

Foundation of Floating Solar Project in Kollam

During his visit, PM Modi also laid the foundation stone for a 50 MW Floating Solar Project in West Kallada, located in Kollam district. He noted that India has emerged as one of the leading countries in solar energy production and reaffirmed the commitment to enhancing solar energy initiatives within Kerala. This project reflects the government’s aim to integrate solar technology into regional energy policies.

Electrification of Railway Line and New Train Service Launched

Additionally, the Prime Minister dedicated the Shoranur-Nilambur Road Railway Line Electrification Project to the nation. The electrification of this crucial rail segment is expected to enhance train operations, making them faster and more efficient by eliminating the necessity for locomotive changes at Shoranur. Furthermore, he inaugurated a new train service connecting Palakkad and Pollachi, which is set to improve rail connectivity between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, benefiting daily commuters, pilgrims, traders, and tourists traveling across the states.
