Prime Minister Modi and Canadian PM Carney Set for Key Meetings in Delhi

The CSR Journal Magazine

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to arrive in India for a four-day visit beginning on Friday, with initial engagements taking place in Mumbai. This visit is regarded as vital for enhancing the diplomatic relations between India and Canada. The Ministry of External Affairs has shared insights about Carney’s itinerary, focusing on his upcoming discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This visit signifies a notable shift in Canada’s diplomatic approach towards India, following a period of tense relations under the previous administration of Justin Trudeau. Prime Minister Modi proactively invited Carney amidst efforts to restore and fortify bilateral connections.

Planned Discussions Between the Two Leaders

As part of their agenda, Prime Ministers Modi and Carney will engage in delegation-level talks at Hyderabad House. They are expected to review advancements in various sectors encompassed by the India–Canada strategic partnership. Their discussions aim to build on prior engagements that occurred in Kananaskis, Calgary in June 2025 and Johannesburg, South Africa in November 2025.

Key areas of focus will include ongoing cooperation related to trade and investment. The leaders plan to discuss developments in energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, and research, as well as initiatives promoting connections among people in both countries.

Regional and Global Perspectives

Beyond bilateral discussions, they will also exchange perspectives on regional and global issues. In addition, both leaders will participate in the India–Canada CEOs Forum scheduled for later that day, further promoting business collaboration between the two nations.

This visit is intended to restore momentum to the relationship, particularly following a diplomatic incident in 2023 that strained international ties over the assassination of a Khalistani separatist.

PM Modi’s Ongoing Diplomatic Engagements

Concurrent to these preparations, Prime Minister Modi is currently visiting Israel, where he has met with his counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu. Upon concluding his diplomatic commitments in Israel, Modi is expected to return to India for the scheduled bilateral talks with Prime Minister Carney.
