Gail Invests $63 Million in Heating Unit at Ratnagiri LNG Terminal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Gail India has announced a significant investment of ₹600 crore ($63.1 million) to construct a heating unit at its Ratnagiri LNG terminal. This initiative aims to enhance the gasification process of super-chilled liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to the company’s business development director, RK Singhal. The project is expected to be completed by June 2027, which will allow the terminal to operate at its full capacity of five million tons per annum.

Singhal shared these details during an industry event, highlighting the current operational status of the LNG terminal. At present, the facility is functioning at approximately 50 per cent capacity due to the absence of the heating unit. The planned investment is seen as a crucial step towards optimising the terminal’s efficiency and output.

Previously, the Ratnagiri facility relied on heat generated from the waste of a power plant operated by a different entity to facilitate the gasification of LNG. However, Singhal noted that this power plant is currently non-operational, necessitating the need for a dedicated heating unit to ensure smooth operations.

Future Plans for Energy Generation

In addition to the heating unit, Gail India is also in the process of constructing a small captive power plant. This facility is intended to generate heat specifically for the liquefied natural gas operations at the Ratnagiri terminal. The establishment of this power plant is expected to further enhance the efficiency of the gasification process, allowing the terminal to maximise its output.

The decision to invest in these facilities reflects Gail’s commitment to improving its infrastructure and operational capabilities. By ensuring that the terminal can function at full capacity, the company aims to meet the increasing demand for natural gas in the region. This is particularly relevant given the growing emphasis on cleaner energy sources in India.

As part of its broader strategy, Gail is focusing on enhancing its LNG infrastructure across the country. The investment in Ratnagiri is aligned with the company’s objectives to expand its operations and increase its market share in the energy sector. This move is also anticipated to contribute to the overall energy security of India.

Impact on the LNG Market

The completion of the heating unit and the captive power plant is expected to have a positive impact on the LNG market in India. With the ability to operate at full capacity, the Ratnagiri terminal will play a crucial role in supplying LNG to various sectors, including power generation, industrial use, and transportation.

Furthermore, the investment aligns with the Indian government’s initiatives to promote the use of natural gas as a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. By enhancing the infrastructure for LNG, Gail is contributing to the national goal of reducing carbon emissions and transitioning towards a more sustainable energy future.

The Ratnagiri LNG terminal is strategically located to serve not only the local market but also to facilitate the distribution of natural gas to neighbouring regions. This expansion of capacity is expected to bolster the supply chain for LNG, ensuring that the growing demand for natural gas is met efficiently.
