Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of SEMICON India 2026 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi on September 17. This event will run until September 19 and involves discussions on India’s semiconductor and electronics landscape. Key areas of focus include industry engagement, policy direction, and fostering international partnerships.

The electronics manufacturing sector in India has experienced remarkable growth over the past 11 years, with production increasing nearly sixfold. Mobile phone exports have surged by 127 times during the 2014-15 to 2024-25 period, according to official data. This growth aligns with the government’s vision of AtmaNirbhar Bharat, aiming to establish India as a global manufacturing hub.

Statistics indicate that electronics goods production rose from approximately Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to about Rs 12 lakh crore by 2024-25. Additionally, exports of electronics goods grew from Rs 38,000 crore to roughly Rs 3.3 lakh crore during the same timeframe. In the mobile phone segment, production surged from Rs 18,000 crore to Rs 5.45 lakh crore, reflecting a 28-fold increase.

Government Initiatives in Semiconductor Development

The Indian Government launched the Semicon India Programme in January 2022, targeting the establishment of a comprehensive semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem. This initiative encompasses design, fabrication, assembly, testing, and packaging processes. Within four years, the government has approved ten semiconductor projects, attracting investments of around Rs 1.6 lakh crore.

Two plants, operated by Micron and Kaynes, have already begun commercial production, with plans for two additional plants to commence operations this year. The government is also nurturing the chip design ecosystem by providing tools to 315 universities at no cost, with usage surpassing 200 lakh hours and resulting in the development of 211 chips by 75 institutions nationwide.

Furthermore, 24 projects focused on semiconductor chips and System on Chips (SoCs) have received government approval, addressing sectors such as video surveillance and satellite communications. Fourteen companies involved in these projects have raised over Rs 650 crore in venture capital funding.

Investments and Job Creation in the Electronics Sector

The growth within the electronics manufacturing sector has also led to an increase in job opportunities. Industry estimates suggest that the sector supports around 25 lakh direct and indirect jobs, with approximately 12 lakh roles linked specifically to mobile phone manufacturing across various functions, including logistics and supply chain.

As part of the India Semiconductor Mission, ten semiconductor manufacturing units are currently under construction. Additionally, 249 applications have been submitted under the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme, which focuses on components, base materials, and capital equipment.

Significant project approvals include semiconductor manufacturing initiatives across six states, with substantial facilities planned in Gujarat, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh. Notably, Micron Technology Inc. is investing Rs 22,516 crore to establish a facility in Gujarat aimed at assembling and testing DRAM and NAND products.

Other prominent projects include Tata Electronics’ planned investment of Rs 91,526 crore for a facility in Gujarat alongside a similar venture in Assam for Rs 27,120 crore. Furthermore, collaborations with international firms, such as the establishment of facilities in Odisha and Punjab, are expected to enhance the local manufacturing ecosystem and contribute to technological advancements.
