The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase I of the Noida International Airport located in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, on March 28. The event was attended by Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel, and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. During the ceremony, a sacred artefact associated with Lord Buddha was presented to Prime Minister Modi.

Investment and Project Significance

The first phase of the airport has been constructed with an investment of approximately Rs 11,200 crore under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. As stated by the Prime Minister’s Office, this airport is expected to serve as a significant international gateway for the National Capital Region (NCR) and play a key role in augmenting the country’s aviation infrastructure while enhancing both regional and international connectivity.

Complementing Existing Facilities

Noida International Airport is positioned as the second international airport for the Delhi NCR region, designed to complement the existing Indira Gandhi International Airport. The two airports are intended to function as an integrated aviation system, aimed at reducing congestion, increasing passenger capacity, and establishing Delhi NCR as a prominent hub in global aviation.

Passenger Capacity and Infrastructure

This airport is among the largest greenfield projects in India. Initially, it will handle up to 12 million passengers annually, with the potential to expand capacity to 70 million as development progresses. The airport is equipped with a 3,900-meter runway that supports wide-body aircraft and modern navigation systems, including an Instrument Landing System (ILS) and advanced airfield lighting to facilitate efficient operations at all times and in all weather conditions.

Cargo and Logistics Capabilities

The Noida International Airport features a comprehensive cargo ecosystem, including a Multi-Modal Cargo Hub that consists of an Integrated Cargo Terminal and designated logistics zones. This facility is designed to process over 250,000 metric tonnes of cargo per year, with plans for expansion to around 1.8 million metric tonnes. Additionally, it includes a dedicated 40-acre Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility for supporting aviation operations.

Sustainable Design and Cultural Integration

Noida International Airport is designed as a sustainable and forward-thinking infrastructure project, aspiring to operate as a net-zero emissions facility. It incorporates energy-efficient systems and environmentally conscious practices throughout its operations. Furthermore, the architectural design draws inspiration from Indian heritage, integrating features reminiscent of traditional ghats and havelis, thereby harmonizing cultural elements with modern infrastructure.
