PM Modi congratulated Tarique Rahman on the BNP’s projected victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to Tarique Rahman following the projected outcome of Bangladesh’s 13th parliamentary elections, in which the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) appears to have secured a significant victory. In a message shared on X, PM Modi stated that this win demonstrates the confidence of the Bangladeshi populace in Rahman’s leadership abilities.

Support for Democratic Values

The Prime Minister expressed India’s commitment to backing a democratic and progressive Bangladesh while emphasizing his eagerness to enhance bilateral relations. Modi remarked, “India will continue to stand in support of a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted relations and advance our common development goals.”

BNP’s Path to Government Formation

Earlier on the same day, the BNP announced its intention to form the government as vote counting progressed in the parliamentary elections. The party’s media cell communicated via X, stating that the BNP anticipated securing a significant majority of seats in the upcoming government.

Election Results and Historical Context

Reports from local media indicate that the BNP is approaching a historic victory in these elections. According to the Daily Star, vote counting has concluded in 249 constituencies, with 50 still pending. Out of a total of 299 seats, preliminary figures suggest that the BNP and its allies have captured 181 seats, while Jamaat and its allies have secured 61 seats. These results indicate a notable change in the political dynamics of Bangladesh.

Respect for Khaleda Zia

Tarique Rahman, the BNP chairman, has requested that celebrations of the election victory be postponed in honor of his mother, Khaleda Zia, who passed away prior to the polls. He has called for prayers for her following Friday’s congregational prayers.

Personal Election Achievement

Rahman has been informally declared the victor from the Bogura-6 (Sadar) constituency, where he achieved a decisive win over his closest rival, as noted by the Daily Star. The recent election represents a turning point for Bangladesh as it moves away from the well-known ‘Battle of Begums’ period, especially in light of the recent passing of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia and the ban on the Awami League party, led by Sheikh Hasina.
