PM Modi Arrives in Maldives on First State Visit Post-Muizzu Era; To Be Guest of Honour on Independence Day

The CSR Journal Magazine

After completing his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has now reached the Maldives, where he was welcomed by President Mohamed Muizzu and other cabinet ministers. Modi is on a two-day visit to Malé, upon the invitation of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu. He was received with a traditional dance performance by children and later proceeded for high-level discussions.

This is the first official visit since President Muizzu took office in November 2023. The visit is being seen as a significant diplomatic move, considering the recent tensions between the two countries under Muizzu’s leadership.

Tomorrow marks the Independence Day of the Maldives, and Prime Minister Modi will be the Guest of Honour. It is expected that he will inaugurate several India-assisted projects during his stay.

In his departure statement, the Prime Minister said, “This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries. I look forward to my meetings with President Muizzu and other political leaders to advance our joint vision of a Comprehensive Economic and Maritime Security Partnership, and to strengthen our cooperation for peace, prosperity, and stability in the Indian Ocean Region.”

This visit follows Modi’s trip to the United Kingdom, where a trade agreement was signed to eliminate tariffs on key goods such as textiles, cars, among others.
