Pigeons and Cockroaches Highlight Hygiene Issues at Hyderabad Bakery

The CSR Journal Magazine

Food safety teams from the Cyberabad Commissionerate (CMC) discovered numerous hygiene and safety violations during a recent inspection at Bake Max Foods, also known as Brown Bear Bakery, located in Kukatpally, Hyderabad. This inspection revealed troubling conditions including an infestation of cockroaches and the presence of pigeons in a storage area designated for raw materials.

While food handlers were observed adhering to some positive practices, such as wearing aprons and hairnets, the inspection highlighted serious breaches. Specifically, officials indicated that eggs intended for baking were not adequately cleaned before storage, posing significant contamination risks. The presence of pests exacerbated these concerns regarding hygiene and food safety.

In addition to pest issues, inspectors reported uneven and slippery flooring within the manufacturing unit as well as the use of rusted baking trays for food preparation. These findings contribute to an overall unsafe food processing environment, impacting both product quality and consumer safety.

Concerns Over Labelling and Product Traceability

During the inspection, it was noted that finished products lacked essential manufacturing and expiry date labels. Only batch numbers were marked, which could hinder product traceability and consumer awareness about the freshness and safety of the goods. This raised further alarms among health officials about the bakery’s compliance with established food safety regulations.

Subsequent to these findings, food samples were collected for laboratory analysis to assess potential health risks. Officials disclosed that a show-cause notice would soon be issued to the bakery management, mandating improvements in hygiene standards, storage practices, and pest-control measures. Compliance with product labelling requirements was also emphasised as critical for the operation of the bakery.

The bakery received a score of 71 out of 92 (78%) on its hygiene assessment, categorising it as needing improvement under the department’s rating system. This score reflects an urgent necessity for the establishment to rectify identified deficiencies to ensure the safety of the products it offers to customers.

Ongoing Efforts to Enhance Food Safety Standards

This inspection was part of a broader initiative by the Cyberabad Commissionerate to enforce food safety and hygiene compliance among establishments within its jurisdiction. Officials reiterated the importance of regularly monitoring food businesses to uphold public health standards and protect consumer interests.

Cyberabad Commissionerate representatives stated that they would continue conducting regular inspections across food establishments to strengthen food safety protocols. The emphasis on compliance with hygiene and safety regulations was deemed critical for maintaining the quality and safety of food served to the public.

Operators of food businesses have been called upon to ensure stringent adherence to these regulations, highlighting the shared responsibility in providing safe food to consumers. Such compliance is essential for building trust and maintaining public health standards within the community.
