Concerns Over Pakistan-Linked Terrorism Raised at UNHRC, Pahalgam Terror Attack Highlighted

The CSR Journal Magazine

During the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Yasser Laaroussi, who is affiliated with the ECO-FAWN Society, underscored the persistent threat of terrorism in the region. He specifically referred to the recent attack in Pahalgam, a locality in Jammu and Kashmir, which has intensified worries over safety and human rights within the area. In an exclusive conversation, Laaroussi articulated the profound impact of the Pahalgam incident and expressed condolences to the victims and the broader Indian community. He emphasized that terrorism should never be justified and urged the global community to recognize the human toll such violence exacts.

Significance of Remembering Victims

Laaroussi pointed out the importance of commemorating such tragic events, stating that it is essential for honoring the victims while also reinforcing a collective commitment to combat terrorism. He raised concerns regarding the ongoing threat posed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, asserting that it significantly undermines peace and stability in South Asia. Laaroussi described how cross-border militancy continues to jeopardize security in Jammu and Kashmir, fostering an atmosphere of fear among civilians and impeding development.

Call for Stronger Action Against Terrorism

He suggested that the international community must assess whether adequate measures are being implemented to counter terrorism emanating from across borders. While acknowledging the steps already taken by international bodies to tackle extremism, Laaroussi remarked that a more robust and coordinated approach is necessary. He insisted that responses to terrorist acts must go beyond mere condemnation and translate into effective policies that obstruct terrorist organizations from operating without hindrance.

Accountability and International Cooperation Needed

Laaroussi called upon the United Nations, along with governments and civil society, to adopt a more proactive stance in ensuring accountability for countries allegedly supporting or sheltering terrorist entities. He advocated for heightened scrutiny and diplomatic pressure on those nations. Furthermore, he stressed the need for enhanced international collaboration to dismantle terrorist networks, curb the funding for extremist organizations, and fortify global counterterrorism measures. Laaroussi stated that a united effort from governments, international institutions, and communities worldwide is crucial in the battle against terrorism.
