Opposition Parties Request Meeting with President Droupadi Murmu Regarding CEC Gyanesh Kumar

The CSR Journal Magazine

The opposition parties have reached out to President Droupadi Murmu to discuss issues concerning Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. This request follows a significant protest by leaders of the INDIA bloc on October 6, where they expressed their concerns regarding the upcoming Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Reports indicate that Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, has organised a lunch meeting for opposition members of Parliament at 1 PM in New Delhi. During this meeting, lawmakers are expected to sign a letter aimed at securing an appointment with CEC Gyanesh Kumar. The INDIA bloc has insisted on receiving satisfactory explanations from the Election Commission regarding their reservations.

The protest has been framed as part of a broader campaign dubbed “Save Democracy.” Earlier, on October 6, leaders from various parties within the INDIA bloc attempted to march towards Nirvachan Sadan but were impeded by barricades set up by law enforcement.

Key Developments from the Protest

Following the march, the protest culminated in a sit-in at Akashvani Bhawan. During this gathering, Rahul Gandhi claimed around 300 Opposition MPs were present and expressed their desire to meet with the Election Commissioners to voice their concerns. This large turnout underlined the opposition’s discontent with the handling of the electoral roll revision process by the Election Commission.

Notably, several leaders from the opposition, including prominent figures like Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained by Delhi Police during the demonstration. Rahul Gandhi defended the actions of the protesters, asserting that their primary aim was to engage in dialogue with the Election Commissioners regarding their inquiries about the electoral roll updates.

In the aftermath of the protest, the Election Commission of India (ECI) made a clarification stating that no political party had formally requested an appointment until 4 PM on the day of the protest. They issued a statement indicating that the Delhi Police had informed them that a delegation of nearly 240 MPs, led by Rahul Gandhi, wished to meet with the Election Commissioners to present a memorandum at the Parliament House Annexe.

Election Commission’s Stance on the Protest

The Election Commission asserted that it viewed the proposed meeting’s format and location as “unusual,” given their established protocols. They indicated that efforts were made to accommodate the situation by considering sending a senior executive officer to receive the memorandum from the opposition members. However, this offer was ultimately declined by the protesting MPs, adding another layer to the ongoing discourse between the opposition and the Election Commission.

The situation is ongoing as the opposition continues to push for accountability and transparency in the electoral process. The INDIA bloc remains resolute in its demand for clarification on issues related to the electoral rolls, highlighting a growing tension between them and the Election Commission.

As discussions and negotiations progress, the outcome of the opposition’s requests and the subsequent actions of the Election Commission will be pivotal in shaping the landscape of Indian electoral politics in the lead-up to the next elections.
