Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla congratulated India’s athletes for their exceptional performances at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Speaking on August 3, he praised the dedication and hard work of the medal winners, emphasising how their achievements have brought pride to the nation. Birla’s remarks were made during a session of the Lok Sabha, where he lauded the Indian contingent’s successful campaign at the recently concluded sporting event.

Commendation from Rajya Sabha Chairman

Rajya Sabha Chairman CP Radhakrishnan also expressed his congratulations to the Indian athletes during his address in the Upper House. He noted that members of the Rajya Sabha joined him in acknowledging the exceptional achievements of the contingent at both the Commonwealth Games and the Commonwealth Para Games held in Glasgow. He stated that the House collectively celebrated the athletes’ performances, showcasing the national pride felt throughout the country.

Radhakrishnan highlighted India’s impressive ranking in the medal tally, as the nation secured fourth place with a total of 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. He expressed the view that such achievements in various sporting disciplines reflect the hard work and commitment of the athletes, reinforcing national pride and unity.

Additionally, Radhakrishnan acknowledged the achievements of the para athletes, citing their record performance that resulted in seven medals, which marked a significant milestone for Indian sports. His remarks underscored the importance of recognising the contributions of all athletes who participated in the games.

Upcoming Commonwealth Games in India

The 2026 Commonwealth Games concluded after eleven days of competitive events, during which the Commonwealth Games flag and ceremonial baton were officially handed over to India. This significant transfer took place in a closing ceremony and sets the stage for the next edition of the Games, scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad in 2030.

During the handover ceremony, notable representatives from India, including Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, Indian Olympic Association president PT Usha, and Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, received the Commonwealth Games flag and baton. This will mark a historic moment as India becomes the second country, after Australia, to host the multi-sport event more than once, having previously held it in New Delhi in 2010.

While India’s total medal count of 39 from the Glasgow Games was lower than the 61 medals earned in Birmingham in 2022, context indicates a notable achievement. The 2026 edition featured fewer sports, with India managing a similar fourth-place finish despite a reduced contingent of 122 athletes as opposed to 210 from four years prior. The medal conversion rate improved considerably, showcasing that 38 athletes returned home with medals.

As preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games begin, India’s sporting community remains optimistic about the future.
