Odisha Woman Allegedly Involved in Uncle’s Murder Over Financial Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

An alleged murder case has emerged in the Ganjam district of Odisha, centring on a financial dispute within a family. Sudhir Patra, a local real estate businessman, was reportedly kidnapped, tortured, and killed, with the involvement of his niece Nivedita Patra, her brother Tushar Patra, and her boyfriend Kalu Pradhan. The incident unfolded after Sudhir was last seen on April 15, returning home from a volleyball match near Berhampur.

Following his disappearance, Sudhir’s family filed a missing persons report with the police. A week later, his decomposed body was discovered in a forested area adjacent to Sorada. Due to the state of decomposition, family members primarily recognised him by his clothing.

Authorities have indicated that the murder was allegedly orchestrated by Nivedita Patra amidst rising tensions within the family over financial matters and personal suspicions. The investigation further suggests that hired criminals from outside the state were involved in the conspiracy.

Motives Behind the Crime

According to the Ganjam Superintendent of Police, the root cause of the conflict seems to stem from disputes over inheritance following the recent death of Nivedita’s father, who was a prominent businessman. The siblings became convinced that Sudhir had unjustly profited from their father’s property dealings.

Nivedita had allegedly harboured suspicions that her uncle was participating in occult practices responsible for her father’s demise. This growing animosity culminated in their decision to target Sudhir for kidnapping, initially intending to demand ransom from his family.

The kidnapping took a violent turn when Sudhir was intercepted on April 15 and forced into a Bolero vehicle. A technical failure required his transfer to another car, leading to his eventual assault in a remote location near a temple in Baliguda. Reports suggest that during the night, the accused engaged in drinking and eating before violently attacking Sudhir.

Investigation Developments

In the early hours of April 16, the brutal assault led to Sudhir’s death, after which his body was disposed of along a rural road on the Baliguda-Koraput route. The accused fled towards Chhattisgarh, facing multiple vehicle breakdowns during their escape and reportedly seeking assistance from locals while attempting to avoid capture.

As the investigation unfolded, law enforcement officials apprehended a total of nine suspects, including relatives and hired accomplices from outside Odisha. The Superintendent of Police confirmed that the investigation is nearing completion, with further arrests possible.

Local intelligence and inter-state police collaboration, particularly with teams from Gujarat, played a significant role in cracking the case. Several suspects had reportedly sought refuge outside Odisha post-incident. Authorities are currently interrogating those arrested to piece together the entire sequence of events leading to the murder.
