NTPC CSR Expenditure in FY2024-25
NTPC has been spending more than the prescribed amount as per the Company’s Act for its CSR initiatives each year. In the FY 2024-25, the PSU spent Rs. 362.94 crore on CSR initiatives, exceeding the prescribed amount of Rs. 295.29 Cr.
As per NTPC’s Annual Report for FY 2024-25, the Company’s CSR initiatives have touched the lives of around 18.4 lakhs people generally residing at remote locations in various parts of the country in one or the other way.
CSR focus of NTPC
CSR has been synonymous with NTPC’s core business of power generation. Since its inception, the Company has been very sensitive to the needs of the neighbouring community and persons whose livelihood has been affected due to the establishment of a power plant. Considering this the company has been undertaking its community development initiatives, majorly at the local sites of its operations. However, considering inclusive growth & environment sustainability, some of the activities are also undertaken by it in different parts of the country to supplement governmental efforts. NTPC conducts a majority of its CSR initiatives through the NTPC Foundation.
NTPC’s initiatives have significantly contributed to poverty reduction and the overall prosperity of neighboring communities. Through strategic interventions, underdeveloped areas have witnessed notable progress, including improvements in village infrastructure, education, healthcare facilities, access to clean drinking water, and better road networks. These benefits are accessible to all community members, regardless of socio-economic background.
NTPC places a strong emphasis on empowering individuals from low-income backgrounds by providing scholarships and vocational training opportunities and fostering education and skill development. Additionally, prior to commencing power projects, NTPC conducts thorough social and environmental impact assessments to ensure alignment with community needs and concerns. NTPC Foundation
With an objective to serve and empower the physically challenged and economically weaker sections of the society including women, NTPC Foundation has been set up by NTPC to take up projects & programmes addressing niche domains of socio-economic concerns. Through various initiatives such as operating healthcare centres, establishing disability rehabilitation centres, offering IT education, providing scholarships, promoting sports, and empowering women through skill training programmes, the NTPC Foundation strives to create a more inclusive and equitable society.
Major CSR activities of NTPC include:
Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM)
GEM is a program wherein a four-week residential workshop for girl-children in the age group of 10 to 12 years is organised. The workshop aims at the upliftment of girl children through various interventions to make girls self-reliant and confident in all walks of life and become a catalyst in transforming their lives, and the lives of their families and bringing positive changes in the community they live in and the nation at large.
The participants for the summer residential workshop are selected from various Govt. Schools of villages in the vicinity of the Company’s Projects/Stations including the Company’s Joint Ventures and Subsidiaries. The entire cost of the programme including their boarding and lodging in a safe and secure environment of these girl children is borne by the Company. Further, free education is provided to around 180 girl students admitted to different Township Schools of the Company.
In 2022, the programme was implemented across 33 NTPC locations and welcomed approximately 2,405 girl participants. In 2023, the programme expanded to 40 NTPC locations, with participation of around 2,707 girls.
NTPC Limited recently announced that the integrated power company is gearing up to launch the latest edition of its flagship CSR initiative, the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM), starting from April 2024. The new edition will add nearly 3000 meritorious children from underprivileged sections of the society at 42 identified locations of the power major, thereby taking the total number of beneficiaries above 10,000 mark.
This programme aligns with the Government of India’s “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ initiative and is designed to tackle gender inequality by nurturing girls’ imaginations and fostering their ability to explore boundless opportunities. The goal is to empower them to become catalysts of change, influencing not only themselves but also their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
The GEM Mission, initiated as a pilot project in 2018 with just three locations and 392 participants, has since flourished into a nationwide movement. Despite challenges posed by the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the programme has continued to expand its reach and impact.
CSR for Menstrual Hygiene
As part of its commitment to community health and women empowerment, NTPC Bongaigaon under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, in collaboration with the District Administration, Kokrajhar, and the Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club, recently donated seven sanitary napkin incinerators, five to Bodoland University and two to Kokrajhar University.
The provision of sanitary napkin incinerators will help in ensuring safe, hygienic, and eco-friendly disposal of menstrual waste on university campuses. Such interventions are vital in addressing menstrual hygiene challenges, breaking taboos, and enabling students to pursue education with confidence and dignity.
CSR for Skilling: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centres
The NTPC Foundation provides IT Skills to visually/physically challenged persons through its Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Centres. The initiative aims to extend support to specially-abled individuals to move along the mainstream society. Around 2239 students have benefitted under this initiative till March’2021. They are placed at different Govt. Institutes, mainly in the banking sector, through various Centres, which were set up jointly with the University of Delhi, Gauhati University (Guwahati) and Devi Ahillya Vishwavidyalaya (Indore) and four Govt. Blind Schools at Ajmer (Rajasthan), Lucknow (UP), Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) and Mysuru (Karnataka). Currently, ICT Centre at Devi Ahilya VishwaVidyalaya, Indore, is functional and successfully imparts training to students with disabilities.
Disability Rehabilitation: Inclusion through Mobility
Disability Rehabilitation Centres (DRCs) In partnership with the National Institute of Locomotor Disabilities (NILD) under the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, NTPC Foundation runs DRCs at Tanda, Rihand, Korba, and Dadri. These centres provide assistive devices, surgical corrections, physiotherapy, and counselling services to persons with disabilities. In the reporting year, 2,868 individuals benefitted, with 5,399 interventions including surgical aids and mobility appliances—enabling them to lead more dignified and independent lives.
Programme for TB Control – DOTs cum DMC
DOTs cum DMC Centres for TB/HIV Control in collaboration with the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Programme (RNTCP), NTPC Foundation operates Directly Observed Treatment (DOTs) cum Designated Microscopy Centres (DMCs) at 9 NTPC hospitals. These centres are augmented by mobile ambulance units, extending diagnostic and treatment services up to 25–30 km from NTPC stations. In FY 2024-25, the program screened 6,586 cases, offering diagnosis and treatment for TB and HIV, thereby contributing to India’s goal of TB elimination.
CSR for Education: NTPC UTKARSH
NTPC Utkarsh is the Merit Scholarship Scheme of NTPC. In order to encourage and motivate children and youth, for higher studies, from neighbouring villages of NTPC Projects / Stations, NTPC management has launched NTPC UTKARSH – a Merit Scholarship under the NTPC Foundation applicable to students from economically weaker & marginalised section of the community in the villages in the vicinity of NTPC Projects/Stations. The scheme benefits students from neighborhood communities pursuing X, XII, ITI, BE/B.Tech and MBBS studies.
Scholarship, Higher Education and Career Support
NTPC is committed to empowering meritorious and underprivileged students through financial and academic support:
Scholarships and support under Vidyarthi Vikas Yojana, benefiting students from economically weaker sections in states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan.
Support to single-teacher schools in slum areas (Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, and Bikaner), providing foundational education to marginalized children.
Educational partnerships with institutions of national repute such as: IIT Roorkee – Research and Experiential Learning Centre on Sustainable Energy. IIT Madras – NTPC Centre for Cardiac Physiology and Engineering Research. AIIMS Raebareli – Girls’ hostel for MBBS students.
Educational tours for tribal students and ongoing mentorship initiatives.
CSR for Digital Education: Promoting Digital & Smart Education Ecosystem
To bridge the digital divide and modernise learning, NTPC is implementing technology-enabled solutions across the education value chain:
Installation of Smart Classrooms, STEM Labs, Digital Libraries, and Computer Labs in over 100+ government schools across states such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Assam, Kerala, and Mizoram.
Support to specialized institutions like Samkalp IAS Academy, Notopedia and Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalayas for digital enablement and smart content delivery.
Launch of Mobile Science Labs in Assam, and digital literacy drives in tribal and aspirational districts.
Setting up of AI, Robotics & Coding Labs for senior secondary students in Andhra Pradesh, and digital classrooms through EDCIL.
CSR for Sports: Promoting Excellence in Archery
In collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), National Sports Development Fund (NSDF), Sports Authority of India (SAI), and Archery Association of India (AAI), the NTPC Foundation supports Indian Archery across grassroots to elite levels. From 2018 to 2025, Indian archers backed by NTPC have won 291 medals (122 Gold, 92 Silver, 77 Bronze) in prestigious global competitions including the World Cup, Asian Games, and Olympics/Paralympics. This partnership exemplifies NTPC’s commitment to promoting sports culture, youth empowerment, and national pride.
Sustainability
In addition to enriching lives through CSR activities, NTPC undertakes numerous initiatives to ensure environmental sustainability. These include large-scale tree plantation and maintenance, installation of rooftop solar PV systems on power stations, public utility buildings, and schools, as well as the implementation of vermicomposting, bio-methanation plants, and paper recycling machines. Approximately 15% of NTPC’s project cost is allocated to environmental pollution control systems.
NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC Limited, and Nayara Energy, a new-age international downstream energy company of international scale entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in September, last year to explore opportunities in the Green Hydrogen and Green Energy space.
The MoU envisages collaboration to produce Green Hydrogen for Nayara Energy’s captive usage, accelerate decarbonisation and catalyse reduction in carbon footprint. The collaboration is in line with NTPC’s initiatives to develop hydrogen projects in India and aligns with the vision of a self-reliant India (Atmanirbhar Bharat) as laid out by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
NTPC Limited and Oil India Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 31st August 2023, to explore collaboration in the areas of renewable energy, green hydrogen and its derivatives, and decarbonization initiatives including through use of geothermal energy. The MoU shall also facilitate sharing of knowledge and experience on upcoming decarbonisation technologies such as carbon sequestration.
Through the MoU, the two Maharatna giants intend to enhance their footprint in the domain of renewable energy and foray into sustainable solutions towards achieving the nation’s target of achieving Net Zero by the year 2070.
