NHAI to Deploy AI Dashcams Across 40,000 km to Detect Road Defects

The CSR Journal Magazine

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to implement AI-based dashcam analytics services across approximately 40,000 kilometers of the national highway network, which is presently under operation and maintenance contracts. This initiative has been announced in response to increasing commuter complaints regarding road conditions and riding quality. In order to facilitate effective monitoring, NHAI has segmented the country into five zones, with contracts awarded for a duration of two years.

Increase in Public Complaints

This week, the highway ministry disclosed in the Rajya Sabha that public grievances related to highway construction quality and the state of riding surfaces have surged by over 60% this year compared to the previous year. The number of complaints has risen significantly, increasing from 7,030 in the 2024-25 fiscal year to 11,340 by March 12. In the same period, 9,977 grievances were successfully resolved by the ministry.

Functionality of Dashcams

An NHAI official clarified that the dashcams will be installed in all highway patrol vehicles, allowing the recording of critical details pertaining to 30 different types of defects and anomalies found on the highways. The primary areas of focus will include pavement conditions such as potholes, cracks, rutting, and surface deterioration, in addition to operational issues like faded lane markings, damaged crash barriers, and malfunctioning street lights.

Data Management and Reporting System

The recorded data will be processed through a specialized IT platform that includes dedicated modules for data management and AI analytics. Reports identifying defects will be generated within a day, enabling timely instructions for corrective actions to be issued to relevant agencies and officials. This system will also recognize various safety hazards, including illegal median openings, unauthorized signboards, encroachments, and illegal parking.

Survey Frequency and Scope

Surveys are set to be conducted at least once weekly, with additional nighttime inspections performed at least once a month. These inspections will evaluate the performance of road signage, pavement markings, road studs, and highway lighting systems. Furthermore, the assessments will address critical issues, including water stagnation, missing drainage covers, excessive vegetation growth, and the overall condition of bus bays.
