Weather System Forms After Cyclone Arnab

A new weather system is emerging over the Bay of Bengal, just days after Cyclone Arnab impacted parts of India’s eastern coastline. Satellite imagery from India’s INSAT-3DS weather satellite, captured on the morning of October 31, indicates a well-organised area of clouds and thunderstorms in the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjacent regions of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Meteorologists are closely monitoring this system, which is anticipated to strengthen and move towards the coast of Andhra Pradesh.

Low-Pressure Area Develops Into Potential Depression

The weather system initially developed as a low-pressure area over the South Andaman Sea and nearby Andaman and Nicobar Islands on October 29. It subsequently progressed in a west-northwest direction towards the southeast Bay of Bengal. According to the latest forecast from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is projected to intensify into a depression around October 31. This transition signifies a more organised stage of the weather system, characterised by stronger winds and enhanced thunderstorm activity.

Despite the potential for intensification, the most recent satellite bulletin has identified a vortex in the region but has not officially confirmed the development of a depression. The IMD continues to analyse satellite data and other meteorological information to ascertain the system’s strength and trajectory.

Satellite observations have revealed scattered to broken cloud cover over the southeast Bay of Bengal, accompanied by pockets of intense to very intense thunderstorms. Similar patterns of thunderstorm activity have also been documented over parts of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, indicating a significant weather event in the region.

Impacts Expected Over Andaman Sea and Andhra Pradesh

The developing weather system is likely to influence conditions over the Andaman Sea and sections of the Bay of Bengal in the forthcoming days. The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the South Andaman Sea, with isolated instances of heavy rainfall expected. Comparable weather conditions are also anticipated over the North Andaman Sea, where the potential for significant precipitation exists.

Along the Andhra Pradesh coast, the forecast suggests scattered rain and thunderstorms, with the possibility of stronger winds accompanying these weather events. The latest coastal bulletin from the IMD has not issued any port warnings or storm-surge advisories, although conditions are being monitored closely.

As the remnants of Cyclone Arnab continue to diminish over land, the new system over the Bay of Bengal remains in a developing stage. The IMD is actively gathering more satellite observations and meteorological data to provide clearer insights into the system’s eventual intensity and precise movement in the coming days.
