Monsoon Rain Expected Across West Coast, Central India Faces Heatwave on Tuesday

The CSR Journal Magazine

The southwest monsoon is anticipated to progress further across various regions of India on Tuesday, June 23. This movement is expected to bring significant rainfall to numerous eastern, northeastern, and southern states, while central and northern areas are likely to continue facing heatwave conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that favourable conditions now exist for the monsoon to extend into more parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, as well as the remaining regions of Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, and Bihar within the next 48 hours.

On Monday, June 22, the monsoon made notable strides, moving across various parts of central and eastern India after a sluggish onset in several areas. This development is crucial for the agricultural sector, as the timely arrival of the monsoon can greatly influence crop yields and water supply.

Heavy Rainfall and Forecasts

The IMD has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated locations across Assam and Meghalaya, as well as Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim. Additionally, significant rainfall is expected in Bihar, Odisha, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, and the coastal regions of Karnataka, Kerala, Konkan, and Goa, along with various northeastern states and parts of Maharashtra.

Rainfall activity is anticipated to remain vibrant along the west coast, where monsoon conditions have strengthened recently. In Telangana, widespread rainfall is expected, with forecasts suggesting heavy downpours throughout much of the week ahead. Thunderstorms paired with lightning and gusty winds, which could reach speeds of 40-50 km/h, have been warned for isolated regions in Bihar, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Delhi, Haryana, and Punjab.

Despite the spreading monsoon rains across the country, some areas are still experiencing intense heat. Banda in Uttar Pradesh has been reported as the hottest location, recording maximum temperatures of 42.6°C. In contrast, Haflong in Assam has reported the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 17°C, demonstrating the stark contrast between rain-drenched northeastern regions and heatwave-affected areas of central India.

Continued Heatwave in Central India

Although rain-bearing winds from the monsoon are advancing across much of India, heatwave conditions are projected to persist in isolated pockets of East Madhya Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Vidarbha is expected to remain under severe heatwave conditions for an additional day, which could impact daily life and health in the region.

The disparate weather conditions underline an uneven monsoon pattern, which is a typical occurrence during the initial stages of the rainy season. While some regions receive much-needed rain, others remain parched, complicating weather management and climate responses across the nation.

As the southwest monsoon continues to expand its reach over India, the weather conditions are expected to linger, exhibiting a combination of heavy precipitation, thunderstorms, and continued heat across different regions throughout the week. These fluctuations may significantly influence local ecosystems and agriculture, necessitating awareness and preparedness among the population.
