A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped after stepping out for Durga Puja pandal hopping in Baruipur near Kolkata last week. Her boyfriend and his accomplice have been arrested. The victim is a class 9 student who resides in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas district near Kolkata.
The girl met the accused through social media before Durga Puja. Social media chats soon took the form of close friendship. As communication increased, the two reportedly developed a love affair. They also planned to visit Durga Puja pandals together. As per plan, after stepping out for pandal hopping on Ashatmi, the minor was gang-raped. The incident took place in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas. Police have arrested the minor’s boyfriend and one of his accomplices.
How the crime happened?
On the night of Ashtami, the girl went to the Baruipur-Kamalgazi bypass. Her boyfriend was waiting there on a motorbike. The minor’s two friends were also on another bike. The four of them then left on the bikes. The accused took the minor on a bike and went to the area near the Begumpur Katakhal bypass in Baruipur. The girl did not suspect him as she was told they are going for pandal hopping. Allegedly, she was fed soft drinks spiked with arousal tablets. Following this, the girl was taken to a deserted area. Allegedly, there the boyfriend first raped the girl. Two other friends recorded the video of the incident on their mobile phones. Later, the girl was blackmailed with the video.
Allegedly, the minor’s two friends also raped the girl. The girl fell ill due to the torture. Allegedly, the accused dropped the minor in front of a relative’s house that night and fled. The girl was rescued on the following morning of Navami and admitted to Baruipur Subdistrict Hospital. The minor’s family was also informed.
The information was reported at the Baruipur police station. Later, a written complaint was also filed with the police station. The police investigated and arrested the accused boyfriend. After questioning him, the police nabbed an accomplice. The third accused is still absconding. A search is underway for him. The girl undergoing treatment. The victim’s family has demanded strict punishment for the accused.
Sexual assault cases rising in Kolkata
The incident of sexual assault is the latest in a series of crimes against women in Kolkata. On June 25, a law student was raped on the campus of South Calcutta Law College. The Kolkata Police has filed a charge sheet against a former Trinamool Congress student leader, Monojit Mishra, and three others in the case. The rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024 had triggered protests and outrage in Kolkata for several months.
Recent gangrape in Haridevpur, Kolkata
A 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped by two persons in Kolkata’s Haridevpur area on Sunday (September 7, 2025). The alleged incident took place at a house in Regent Colony on Friday (September 5, 2025). Based on a complaint from the survivor, the police pressed charges of gangrape against Chandan Malik and Debangshu Biswas.
According to the complainant, she went to a house with Chandan Malik whom she had met a few months ago. She was told that there was a birthday party at the house. However, when she went to the house, she found only Malik and Biswas there, who allegedly raped her. The woman filed a complaint against the two at the Haridevpur police station on Saturday (September 6, 2025) morning. The duo was arrested.
