In West Tripura, a 55-year-old man has been apprehended for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl, followed by administering poison to her, police reported on Saturday. The victim, aged 15, was admitted to Govind Ballabh Pant (GBP) Hospital in Agartala and is currently in a stable condition.

Authorities revealed that the accused was familiar to the girl and lived nearby. The minor reportedly referred to him as ‘daadu’ (grandpa). The incident took place on Friday morning when the man allegedly lured her into an abandoned room within the locality. It is said he physically assaulted her to the point where she lost consciousness before raping her.

Accused Charged with POCSO

A police official said, “We received the complaint yesterday. Though he was absconding after the incident, we finally arrested him at midnight from a nearby location. He will be produced before the court today (Saturday).” The accused has been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act with charges including rape and attempt to murder.

Following the incident, Dipak Majumder, BJP MLA and Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), visited the survivor at the hospital. “Our administration is committed to taking action against such incidents,” he said, urging that strict measures be taken against the perpetrator.
