Mercedes-AMG Launches GT SUV with 1,169bhp and 700km Electric Range

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV has been officially launched, showcasing a blend of a full-size SUV’s practicality with the performance characteristics of a sports car. The vehicle features a low roofline, a wide track, and muscular wheel arches, giving it a distinctive and aggressive stance. The front of the SUV is marked by an AMG-specific radiator grille with vertical slats, complemented by headlamps that incorporate star-shaped daytime running lights.

At the rear, the design includes six circular tail-lights inspired by turbine aesthetics, along with an optional light strip for added visual appeal. The vehicle is equipped with active aerodynamics, including an AEROKINETICS Airpanel that helps regulate cooling airflow through vertical slats in the front bumper. The GT 55 and GT 63 models feature an adjustable roof spoiler that optimises aerodynamic drag and stability based on driving conditions.

Inside, the SUV is designed with a driver-centric cockpit, featuring a 14-inch central multimedia touchscreen and a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster. A separate 14-inch display is also available for the front passenger. Additional features include a panoramic glass roof, ambient lighting, and optional AMG Performance seats, along with a Burmester 4D sound system. The rear seating arrangement consists of a three-seat bench with foldable seatbacks, ensuring comfort and practicality despite the sloping roofline.

Performance and Powertrain of the Mercedes-AMG GT SUV

The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is offered with two electric powertrain configurations. The entry-level GT 53 features two synchronous motors, producing a combined output of 544bhp and 800Nm of torque. The GT 55 variant escalates this to 816bhp and 1,860Nm, while the top-tier GT 63 boasts an impressive 1,169bhp and 2,000Nm, achieved through three axial-flux motors.

The GT 55 and GT 63 models utilise three axial-flux motors, with two positioned at the rear and one at the front. The front motor serves as a booster, engaging when extra power is needed and disconnecting during lighter loads to enhance efficiency. The GT 53 also features a disconnectable front motor, alongside a two-speed transmission on the rear axle for improved acceleration and efficiency.

The GT 63 can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in just 2.5 seconds and reach 200kmph in 6.8 seconds, with a top speed of 270kmph when equipped with the optional Driver’s Package, showcasing its high-performance capabilities.

Battery, Charging, and Suspension Technology

This electric SUV is equipped with an 800-volt battery system featuring directly cooled cylindrical cells. Mercedes-AMG offers two battery options with usable capacities of 106kWh and 128kWh, with the latter providing a claimed WLTP range of up to 700km. The 106kWh battery supports DC charging at up to 600kW, allowing for a significant range increase in a short time.

The larger 128kWh battery supports charging at up to 710kW, enabling the addition of up to 450km of range in just 10 minutes under optimal conditions. Charging from 10 to 80 per cent can be accomplished in as little as 12 minutes with the larger battery. The innovative cooling system circulates non-conductive oil around individual cells to maintain consistent performance.

The GT SUV features the newly developed AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL+ suspension, which employs active hydraulic elements to manage body roll and pitch. This system replaces traditional stabiliser bars and works in conjunction with adjustable air springs to balance ride comfort and handling precision. Active rear-axle steering is standard across the range, enhancing manoeuvrability and stability at varying speeds.
