Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 Launched at Rs 16.99 Lakh

The CSR Journal Magazine

Renault India has introduced the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 at a price of Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom), marking the entry of the brand’s strong-hybrid technology into the Indian automotive market. This new variant is positioned to enhance the Duster’s appeal in the competitive midsize SUV segment, where it will face rivals such as the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Victoris, and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder. The company has commenced bookings for the vehicle, requiring a token amount of Rs 21,000, which can be made through Renault’s official website and authorised dealerships.

Powertrain and Performance Features

The Renault Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 is equipped with a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which is complemented by two electric motors and a 1.4kWh battery. This hybrid system generates a maximum combined output of 160bhp, while the electric motor offers peak torque of 208Nm. The vehicle employs an intelligent multi-mode transmission that seamlessly manages the power from the petrol engine and electric motors based on driving conditions. According to Renault, the Duster hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 9.6 seconds, showcasing its performance capabilities.

Additionally, the hybrid system allows the SUV to operate on electric power under suitable circumstances, enhancing its efficiency. The vehicle is designed with regenerative braking technology that recovers energy during deceleration, contributing to overall energy efficiency. The battery is charged automatically while the vehicle is in motion, eliminating the need for external charging infrastructure. Notably, the battery employs direct refrigerant cooling to maintain optimal performance and efficiency across varying operating conditions.

Fuel Efficiency and Driving Range

Renault claims that the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 achieves an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29kmpl. The vehicle is also reported to have a combined driving range of up to 1,400km when the fuel tank is full. However, actual fuel economy and range may differ based on various factors, including traffic conditions, driving styles, and road types. This impressive mileage positions the Duster as a competitive option for consumers prioritising fuel efficiency in their vehicle choice.

The combination of hybrid technology and efficient engineering aims to attract environmentally conscious buyers looking for a midsize SUV that does not compromise on performance. The Duster’s strong-hybrid variant is expected to appeal to a broad audience, including those who may be transitioning to hybrid vehicles for the first time.

Suspension, Platform, and Existing Engine Options

The Duster is built on an MTV-CL suspension setup featuring Frequency Dependent Damping (FDD) technology. This suspension arrangement is designed to adapt its damping characteristics based on road inputs, striving to provide a balance between ride comfort on uneven surfaces and stability at higher speeds. This engineering approach aims to enhance the overall driving experience for occupants.

With the introduction of the strong-hybrid powertrain, the Duster’s engine lineup is further diversified. It continues to offer two turbo-petrol options: the entry-level 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, producing 100bhp and 160Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed manual gearbox, and a more powerful 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine that generates 163bhp and 280Nm of torque. The latter engine can be paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCT).

This expansion of engine options allows consumers to choose between conventional turbo-petrol performance and a hybrid setup focused on fuel efficiency. The Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160, with its claimed 29kmpl mileage and 1,400km combined range, is positioned as a strong contender against established strong-hybrid SUVs in the midsize segment, appealing to a wide range of potential buyers.
