“Not targeted at any community”: Manoj Bajpayee responds to ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ controversy

The CSR Journal Magazine

Manoj Bajpayee has addressed the growing controversy surrounding his upcoming Netflix film, ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’, after an FIR was filed in Lucknow alleging the film’s title and promotional content hurt religious and caste sentiments. The FIR, lodged at Hazratganj Police Station, claims the film defames the Brahmin community by associating the word ‘Pandat’—a commonly used variant of ‘Pandit’—with corruption.

Public response prompts clarification from Bajpayee

The backlash has expanded with petitions filed in the Delhi High Court seeking to halt the film’s release, along with social media calls for a boycott. In response, Bajpayee shared a statement on social media stressing that the film is a work of fiction and not intended to insult or target any group. He said he takes public concerns seriously and emphasised his role as an actor focused solely on portraying a character’s personal story.

Actor emphasises focus on storytelling, not commentary

Clarifying the intent behind his role, Bajpayee stated that his involvement in the project was driven by the storyline and character development. “As an actor, I come to a film through the character and the story I am playing. For me, this was about portraying a flawed individual and his journey of self-realisation. This was not meant to be a statement about any community,” he wrote.

Promotional content withdrawn amid rising tensions

Bajpayee also acknowledged the decision by the filmmakers to take down existing promotional material. He said this move was made in response to public sentiment and demonstrates the filmmakers’ seriousness in addressing community concerns. The actor expressed his respect for those who felt hurt, adding that such reactions prompt reflection.

Director Neeraj Pandey affirms fictional nature of the film

Earlier, director Neeraj Pandey also issued a statement clarifying that ‘Ghooskhor Pandat’ is a fictional cop drama. He maintained that the term ‘Pandat’ is used as a colloquial name for a character in the film and is not meant to represent any religious or caste-based identity. Pandey acknowledged that the title may have unintentionally offended some viewers and confirmed the removal of promotional content while discussions continue.

Legal challenges question creative freedom

The matter has now drawn legal scrutiny, with petitions filed in the Delhi High Court arguing that associating a traditionally respected title with corruption potentially defames a community. The petitions suggest that such representation may affect the dignity of an identifiable group and raise questions about the permissible limits of artistic and creative expression under Indian law.
