Abhishek Banerjee, the national general secretary of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has alleged that his party office in Kolkata was stormed and vandalised by individuals allegedly associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The incident reportedly occurred around 4.30 am, where the offenders, allegedly armed with weapons, caused significant damage to the premises.

Describing the attack as a “disgraceful assault on the rule of law,” Banerjee claimed the assailants ransacked the office, smashed furniture, and destroyed electronic devices. He expressed strong indignation regarding the attack and called for immediate action against the individuals involved.

In a social media post, Banerjee further alleged that Kolkata Police failed to respond to calls and emails from party members for almost two hours following the incident. He described the delay in police action as “outrageous and unacceptable,” demanding accountability from the authorities.

Claims of a Planned Attack

The Trinamool Congress has characterised the incident as a “well-planned attack,” suggesting that those responsible were aware of Banerjee’s absence from the city, having left for New Delhi the prior night. This allegation adds to the party’s assertions of systematic targeting of their offices in the wake of their recent electoral losses.

Following the incident, Kolkata Police arrived at the Camac Street office to initiate an investigation. The police have begun reviewing CCTV footage to gather more information about the assailants and the circumstances surrounding the attack. Reports indicated that six individuals have been detained for questioning in connection with the event.

Banerjee shared footage from the office post-attack, expressing his outrage and questioning the inaction of high-ranking officials, including the Governor of West Bengal, the Union Home Minister, and the Prime Minister’s Office. He urged them to take appropriate measures in response to the incident.

Political Implications and Reactions

In the wake of the violence, Banerjee also directed his criticism towards Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, questioning why the TMC is being subjected to such intimidation tactics. He expressed concern over the perceived political climate in West Bengal, where he argued that the Opposition is facing increased hostility.

Banerjee’s ire extended to the overall governance of the state, asserting that if such violence and vandalism continue to be the approach towards the Opposition, the Chief Minister must reconsider his position. The TMC has faced internal struggles, with rival factions vying for control, which may now intertwine with the broader political conflict between the TMC and BJP.

The timing of this incident appears significant, coinciding with the ongoing factional disputes within the TMC. The party’s allegations of widespread vandalism across their offices in the state further highlight the tensions that have escalated in recent months since their electoral defeat.
