The CSR Journal Magazine

Mamata Banerjee, Chief Minister of West Bengal and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate for the Bhabanipur assembly constituency, conducted a padyatra on April 23. The event commenced at Bhowanipur Kansaripara Shitala Mandir and concluded at Patua Para Crossing. Her official Facebook page shared visuals of the event, highlighting her engagement with constituents during the campaign period. The Chief Minister also visited a Jain mandir, further demonstrating her outreach efforts in the region.

Polling Completion in West Bengal

The first phase of polling in West Bengal officially finished at 6 PM on the same day. This phase occurred under stringent security measures across different constituencies. Reports indicate that voting activities at the Sersa Stadium polling booth in Kharagpur came to a halt, with no remaining voters in the queue as the voting hours ended. Following the closure of the main gate at this polling station, the electoral process for the day was marked as completed.

With the culmination of polling, the fates of candidates from various parties are now sealed within Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), awaiting the count. Election officials will begin securing and moving these EVMs to designated strong rooms, where they will be kept under strict supervision to ensure the integrity of the electoral process.

The voter turnout by 5 PM on April 23 reached a significant 89.93 per cent, as noted by the Election Commission. This turnout reflects a substantial public engagement, particularly in regions such as Dakshin Dinajpur, which recorded the highest turnout at 93.12 per cent. Other districts noted impressive participation rates, with Cooch Behar at 92.07 per cent, Birbhum at 91.55 per cent, and Murshidabad at 91.36 per cent. Jalpaiguri also boasted a turnout of 91.20 per cent, alongside Jhargram at 90.53 per cent and Paschim Medinipur at 90.70 per cent. Bankura and Malda maintained turnout rates of 89.91 per cent and 89.56 per cent, respectively, while Darjeeling, lower than other districts, still achieved a commendable 86.49 per cent.

Future Polling Plans

In the context of the 2021 Assembly elections, West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 85.2 per cent, according to data from the Election Commission of India. The current figures highlight a continuing trend of high electoral participation across districts. This year’s polling represents a commitment from constituents to engage in the democratic process, showcasing West Bengal’s active political environment.

Looking ahead, the remaining 142 constituencies in West Bengal are scheduled to hold their polling on May 29. The counting of votes for both phases will occur shortly afterwards, on May 4. The collective outcomes of these events will shape the political landscape of West Bengal as candidates and parties await the results.

The active involvement of local leaders like Mamata Banerjee aims to galvanise voter turnout and connect with the electorate more personally. As the political scene develops, the focus remains on maintaining transparency and order throughout the electoral process, ultimately reflecting the will of the voters in West Bengal.
