The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has officially suspended the licence of the nurses’ mess at Nair Hospital, located in Mumbai Central, following significant breaches of food safety and hygiene regulations. This action was taken immediately after an inspection on September 12, during which the FDA identified serious deficiencies that raised concerns for both patient health and public safety.

In a statement, the FDA highlighted its commitment to safeguarding health standards, particularly in a setting where patient movement and public access are prevalent. The findings led the FDA to promptly act against the mess, used by a considerable number of nursing staff at the hospital.

The Dean of Nair Hospital, Shailesh Mohite, confirmed the closure while clarifying that there are three separate canteens on the premises. The first provides meals for patients, the second serves patients’ relatives and staff, and the third is designated for nurses, which was the facility subjected to the FDA’s raid.

Nurses’ Mess Services Temporarily Replaced

In light of the closure, Nair Hospital has taken immediate steps to ensure that the approximately 400 nurses affected by this suspension continue to receive meals. Mohite stated that interim arrangements have been established to provide food for nursing staff who are currently engaged in studies and work at the hospital.

While the FDA has not disclosed the specific infractions found during its inspection, the hospital administration is prepared to implement any necessary corrective actions as advised by the FDA. Ensuring compliance with health standards is thus an immediate priority for the hospital management.

The enforcement of the suspension underlines the FDA’s proactive strategy in maintaining food safety, particularly in institutions involving vulnerable populations such as hospitals. The ongoing legal measures indicate that further scrutiny may be directed at the hospital’s food service operations.

Additional Licence Suspensions by FDA

The FDA has broadened its scope of enforcement by suspending the licence of Olympia Coffee House in Colaba, Mumbai. This decision stemmed from a consumer complaint and subsequent inspection that uncovered numerous serious food safety violations. Among these issues were improper hygiene practices with a urinal located near food storage areas and direct food handling on unclean floors.

Furthermore, inspections revealed the use of contaminated water and infestations of cockroaches and flies, along with serious storage violations involving food residues. Regarding workforce training, the FDA reported that 34 out of the 35 food handlers at Olympia Coffee House had not undergone the necessary food safety training.

The FDA’s stringent measures also extended to several other food establishments, leading to the cancellation of licences for Ms Blink Commerce in Chembur, Ms Vishwas Sweets and Snacks in Ghatkopar, Ms A-1 General & Dry Fruits, and Ms Milan Punjab in Worli, all for similar safety violations. In addition, restaurants in Pune and Nagpur have faced temporary suspensions as part of the FDA’s enhanced oversight during the festive season.

The FDA has seized a total of 2,813 kg of milk and dairy products across Maharashtra, with a stated value of Rs 7,38,230, in efforts to uphold food safety standards as part of its campaign to protect public health during this time. The actions taken reflect a broader commitment to ensuring food safety across the state.
