Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Claims 16 Lives in Tibet, Evacuates Over 12,000 Residents

The CSR Journal Magazine

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has struck the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, resulting in the deaths of at least 16 individuals and injuring 76 others. The earthquake occurred on Thursday, at approximately 10.33 pm local time, with its epicentre located in Baqen County, Nagqu City. The depth of the quake was recorded at less than 10 kilometres, leading to significant destruction in the area.

Authorities have reported that more than 12,489 residents have been evacuated from their homes as search, rescue, and relief operations are currently underway. The state-run Xinhua news agency has confirmed that efforts are being made to resettle those affected by the disaster.

In response to the calamity, Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered comprehensive search efforts for any missing individuals and has emphasised the need for prompt medical treatment for the injured. A detailed assessment of the injured, including the number of those in serious condition, has yet to be released.

Emergency Response and Relief Efforts Mobilised

The Chinese government has allocated 50 million yuan, approximately $7.5 million, for emergency disaster relief and an additional 30 million yuan for recovery initiatives. Reports indicate that over 330 houses have either collapsed or sustained damage due to the quake, prompting an urgent assessment of the overall destruction in the region.

China Railway Qinghai-Xizang Group Co Ltd announced that passenger trains in the affected section of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway resumed operations at reduced speeds on Friday morning. Meanwhile, State Grid Xizang Electric Power Co Ltd confirmed that electricity had been restored to 1,937 households in Baqen County by 10 am local time on Friday.

Relief supplies have been dispatched to the impacted area, including 1,000 sets of prefabricated houses, 3,239 tents, 2,821 folding beds, and 4,280 quilts, among other essential items, as reported by Xinhua. These supplies are crucial for providing immediate shelter and comfort to those displaced by the earthquake.

Weather Conditions and Ongoing Challenges in Relief Operations

The region surrounding the epicentre of the earthquake is situated at an average altitude exceeding 4,800 metres. Local weather authorities have forecast temperatures to plummet to minus nine degrees Celsius over the next three days, with intermittent snowfall expected on Saturday in three townships near the epicentre. These adverse weather conditions pose additional challenges for relief operations and the safety of affected residents.

In light of the high altitude and low temperatures, President Xi has urged authorities to take all necessary measures to minimise casualties. He has directed officials to closely monitor both earthquake activity and weather conditions to prevent further disasters. Proper accommodation for those displaced, swift repairs to damaged infrastructure, and measures to safeguard lives and property have been highlighted as priorities.

Premier Li Qiang has also called for effective disaster prevention and response strategies to ensure the safety and well-being of residents in the affected areas. The Tibetan Plateau is known for its susceptibility to powerful earthquakes due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, making ongoing vigilance essential in this region.
