Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Tibet Claims 16 Killed, 65 Injured, Prompting Evacuations

The CSR Journal Magazine

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake has reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 16 individuals and left 65 others injured in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. This incident occurred on October 23, with local authorities confirming the figures. The earthquake struck Baqen County in Nagqu City at approximately 10.33 pm local time, at a shallow depth of less than 10 kilometres. In response to the disaster, over 12,000 residents have been evacuated as search and rescue operations continue.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered an extensive search for any missing persons and has emphasised the need for prompt medical treatment for those injured. The earthquake relief headquarters in the city reported that 11 of the injured are in serious condition, while 54 have sustained minor injuries. The ongoing relief efforts aim to address the immediate needs of those affected by the quake.

As of the latest updates, 12,489 residents have been evacuated from the affected areas. The state-run Xinhua news agency reported that relief work is currently underway, focusing on resettlement and the provision of essential services to those displaced by the earthquake.

Infrastructure Damage and Response Efforts

Initial assessments indicate that more than 330 houses have either collapsed or been damaged due to the earthquake. Authorities are actively evaluating the extent of the destruction in the region. In an effort to restore normalcy, passenger trains operating on the affected section of the Qinghai-Xizang Railway resumed services at reduced speeds on the morning following the earthquake, as confirmed by China Railway Qinghai-Xizang Group Co Ltd.

Electricity restoration efforts have yielded positive results, with 1,937 households in Baqen County having their power restored by 10 am local time on Friday. State Grid Xizang Electric Power Co Ltd has reported these developments as part of the ongoing recovery efforts. Additionally, relief supplies, including 1,000 prefabricated houses, over 3,200 tents, and essential items such as quilts and stoves, have been dispatched to the affected areas.

The region surrounding the earthquake’s epicentre is characterised by an average altitude exceeding 4,800 metres. Local weather authorities have warned that temperatures are expected to drop to minus nine degrees Celsius over the next three days, with intermittent snowfall anticipated on Saturday in three townships near the epicentre. These harsh weather conditions pose additional challenges to ongoing relief operations.

Government Directives and Seismic Activity

President Xi Jinping has instructed local authorities to take every possible measure to minimise casualties and to closely monitor both seismic activity and weather conditions to prevent further disasters. The combination of high altitude and low temperatures raises concerns regarding the safety of those affected by the earthquake.

In addition to Xi’s directives, Premier Li Qiang has also called for effective disaster prevention and response measures to safeguard lives and property in the region. The Tibetan Plateau is known for its susceptibility to powerful earthquakes, as it lies in a seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge.

As rescue, relief, and resettlement operations continue, the situation remains critical for the affected population. With the harsh weather conditions complicating efforts, authorities are focused on providing immediate assistance to those in need while assessing the long-term implications of the earthquake on the region’s infrastructure and community well-being.
