Lincoln Memorial To Host International Day Of Yoga Celebrations In US Capital

The CSR Journal Magazine

The iconic Lincoln Memorial will host this year’s International Day of Yoga celebrations in the United States, the Indian Embassy in Washington announced, marking another major milestone in the global promotion of India’s ancient wellness tradition.

In a post on X, the Indian mission invited yoga enthusiasts to participate in the event scheduled for June 19, ahead of the globally observed International Day of Yoga on June 21.

The embassy highlighted a message from PM Modi, who described yoga as “the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, balance, and become whole again,” underscoring the growing international appeal of the practice as a tool for physical and mental well-being.

The event forms part of a wider global campaign centred on this year’s theme, ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’, which seeks to promote yoga as a means of enhancing longevity, flexibility and overall health.

Focus On Wellness And Healthy Ageing

The 2026 celebrations place special emphasis on healthy ageing, reflecting growing global interest in preventive healthcare and holistic wellness practices.

Yoga has increasingly been recognised for its potential benefits in maintaining physical fitness, improving mental health and supporting active lifestyles among older populations. Through this year’s theme, organisers aim to encourage people across age groups to adopt yoga as part of their daily routines.

India has consistently used the International Day of Yoga as a platform to promote wellness and cultural exchange, with events being organised across continents through Indian diplomatic missions and community organisations.

PM Modi’s Yoga Guru To Lead New York Events

A key highlight of this year’s celebrations in the United States will be the participation of H. R. Nagendra, the yoga mentor associated with PM Modi’s personal yoga practice.

Nagendra is set to headline the International Day of Yoga event at Times Square on June 21, one of the most visible and widely attended Yoga Day celebrations outside India. The event is being organised by the Consulate General of India in New York and is expected to attract thousands of participants.

He will be accompanied by N. K. Manjunath and is also scheduled to inaugurate a three-day Yoga and Wellness Retreat at the YO1 Longevity & Health Resort from June 12 to 14.

The retreat will feature yoga sessions, meditation programmes and discussions on stress management, healthy ageing and holistic healthcare. Among the speakers expected to participate are Samin K. Sharma and Raj Bansal.

Indian Diaspora Driving Yoga’s Growth In The US

The visit has been organised with the support of Indian diaspora organisations, including Rajasthan Association of North America, BRUHUD NY Seniors and Jaipur Foot USA.

A prominent figure behind many yoga outreach initiatives in the United States has been Prem Bhandari, who has spent years organising yoga programmes at major venues, including the United Nations and Capitol Hill.

Bhandari described Nagendra’s visit as an important moment for the Indian-American community and said it would help strengthen yoga education, research and cultural ties between India and the United States.

A Decade Of Global Yoga Diplomacy

The International Day of Yoga traces its origins to PM Modi’s proposal at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. Later that year, the United Nations adopted a resolution designating June 21 as the International Day of Yoga, with the first global observance taking place in 2015.

Since then, participation has expanded dramatically, with millions of people taking part in events organised worldwide every year. India’s Ministry of External Affairs has made Yoga Day a key element of its public diplomacy efforts, using it to promote wellness, cultural understanding and people-to-people connections.

This year’s celebrations at the Lincoln Memorial and Times Square are expected to further reinforce yoga’s role as one of India’s most influential cultural exports, while highlighting its growing relevance in global conversations around health, well-being and sustainable lifestyles.
