The CSR Journal Magazine

New Delhi: Renowned Indian tennis player Leander Paes officially became a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday, describing the opportunity as a platform to serve the youth of the nation. At 51, Paes continues to be celebrated as one of India’s most accomplished athletes. His induction into the party occurred in the presence of notable figures, including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.

A New Chapter in Public Life

Paes characterized this transition from sports to politics not merely as a symbolic act, but as a significant responsibility. He expressed gratitude towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for this opportunity, stating that the membership slip he received represents a commitment to serve the country. Addressing the crucial demographic of India’s young population, he stated a desire to improve sports education and infrastructure, hoping to make substantial contributions in the field.

Party Leaders Welcome His Involvement

Union Minister Rijiju took the opportunity to express his optimism regarding Paes’s involvement in politics, anticipating that he would “play a bigger innings” in this new role. He specifically highlighted the potential impact of Paes’s presence on initiatives like the Khelo India programme, aimed at promoting sports among the youth. BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar also supported this development, suggesting that Paes’s appeal to younger audiences could enhance the party’s outreach, particularly in West Bengal, where elections are approaching.

Previous Political Engagement

This shift marks a full-circle moment for Paes, who previously had a brief association with the Trinamool Congress, a party he joined in 2021 during the Goa elections. His recent transition to the BJP places him among an increasing number of prominent athletes who have ventured into the political arena.

A Stellar Sports Career

On the tennis court, Paes achieved remarkable success over more than three decades, with a total of 18 Grand Slam titles in both men’s and mixed doubles. His historic bronze medal win at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics further solidified his status as a national icon. Alongside Mahesh Bhupathi, with whom he formed the famous duo known as the “Indian Express,” Paes played a pivotal role in elevating Indian tennis on the global stage, particularly through his notable performances in the Davis Cup.

Empowerment Through Sports

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Paes noted that he has represented India for four decades and is now eager to dedicate his efforts towards empowering the youth, particularly through initiatives that promote equal opportunity scholarships for women in sports. His entry into the political domain signifies an ambition to leverage his sporting legacy to effect positive change in public service, embarking on a new journey beyond the tennis court.
