‘They Should Have Consulted Us’: Naureen Aslam on Dhurandhar Film Portrayal

The CSR Journal Magazine

Naureen Aslam, the widow of the late Pakistani police officer Chaudhry Aslam, has expressed her perspectives on her husband’s depiction in the recently released film series, Dhurandhar. She commended Sanjay Dutt for embodying the character but clarified that she does not endorse every aspect of the film, particularly the violent sequences that portray her husband taking the lives of innocent people. In a podcast appearance, she elaborated on her late husband’s dedication to his profession, noting that his work garnered international attention, including in regions such as London and the United States.

Praise for Dutt’s Performance

Naureen remarked that Dutt was an ideal choice for the role, stating, “When he stands near the car and raises his eyes, for a moment it felt like Aslam himself.” She highlighted her frequent discussions in Pakistan regarding her husband’s unwavering loyalty to both his character and his duties. Furthermore, she applauded Dutt for his authentic appearance and acting skills that effectively suited the fictional representation.

Concerns About Inaccuracies in Film

However, Naureen expressed dissatisfaction with certain portrayals in the film, particularly regarding the depiction of fictitious police encounters and violence against children, which she believes are misrepresentations. “If they were making a film, they could have at least called me, the police, or journalists to understand both his positive and negative sides,” she stated. She recalled her husband stating that a film would eventually be made about his life after his passing, and while the film has now been released, she feels it does not accurately reflect his character’s complexity. Naureen also pointed out that the film’s representation of Lyari seemed exaggerated and argued that Chaudhry’s character required greater depth and sophistication than what was presented.

Viewing Experience and Insights

Naureen mentioned that she had only seen portions of the film through various clips available. She noted with humor the use of explicit language by the character, recognizing that while it may not be suitable for family audiences, such language is typical within police circles and aligns with the character’s persona.
