Lahaul-Spiti Landslide Kills 13, Rescue Operations Underway

A tragic incident occurred on July 21 in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul-Spiti district when a landslide struck a four-wheeler vehicle near Kahudu Nala, leading to the deaths of at least thirteen individuals, according to police reports. The landslide took place in the Udaipur area, where the vehicle, driven by Bir Singh, was severely damaged by falling rocks.

Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla confirmed the event, stating that rescue and relief operations are currently underway. She noted that the affected vehicle was a Tata Sumo, which was on the route from Kullu to Pangi at the time of the incident.

The police have indicated that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the landslide, which has resulted in a tragic loss of life. Mehla mentioned that efforts are being made to assist the injured, who are being transferred to medical facilities for treatment.

Rescue Operations and Medical Response

Chamba Superintendent of Police Vijay Kumar Saklani provided further details, stating that victims were en route to Lahaul-Spiti when a portion of the hillside collapsed onto their vehicle. The incident reportedly affected residents from Pangi travelling to the region.

Saklani revealed that local teams have reached the site, although communication is challenging due to the area’s poor network connectivity. Medical aid is being offered to those injured at the nearest available facility, demonstrating an immediate response to assist the victims.

With fourteen confirmed as injured, authorities are focused on ensuring that medical attention is provided swiftly. Reports suggest a coordinated effort from local administration and police to oversee the ongoing rescue operations.

Reactions from Officials

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Thakur Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed profound sorrow over the fatal accident. In a message shared on social media platform X, Sukhu conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families, highlighting the emotional toll of such a tragedy.

The Chief Minister has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Lahaul-Spiti to visit the accident site to oversee the response and aid efforts. He also urged that all possible support be provided to families affected by the incident.

In addition to Sukhu, Leader of the Opposition in the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Jairam Thakur, shared his condolences, lamenting the loss of lives, including a child. He termed the incident as extremely tragic and extended his prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured individuals.

Both officials have called for unity and strength for the families in coping with this significant loss, ensuring that support systems are in place during this challenging time.
