PM Modi Expresses Grief Over Birbhum Hotel Fire That Killed Eight in West Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sorrow over the tragic loss of eight lives in a hotel fire that occurred in Tarapith, Birbhum, West Bengal. In a post shared on X, he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this devastating incident. He also wished for the swift recovery of those injured, emphasising the local administration’s efforts to assist those impacted.

Details of the Incident

The hotel fire, which is believed to have been triggered by a short circuit, has led to a confirmed death toll of eight individuals. Birbhum Superintendent of Police Vidit Raj Bhundesh stated that there were no visible signs of smoke or flames upon the arrival of the police and fire brigade. Emergency teams were able to rescue 22 people using ladders, while 11 others were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Initially, seven fatalities were reported, but the number subsequently rose to eight. An investigation team from the forensic science laboratory is expected to visit the scene to determine the precise cause of the fire. Further investigation has resulted in the detention of hotel operators following the registration of a First Information Report (FIR), with police questioning them for additional information.

According to official sources, a total of 28 people were rescued successfully, and seven of them are currently receiving medical attention. The injured individuals hail from Shib Bari Baganara, South Garhill, Meghalaya. Although eight people were ultimately rescued, they were later declared deceased due to the severity of their injuries.

Victims and Their Identities

Among the deceased, five were identified as being from Meghalaya and three from Alipurduar. The individuals from Meghalaya have been named as Rajendra Nath, Asha Nath, Buran Madak, as well as two children, ten-year-old Shivraj Madak and eight-year-old Aushnath Madak. The three victims from Alipurduar have been identified as Kamal Roy, Amit Pal, and Subir Saha. The identity of an individual named Rajesh Sharma from Alipurduar is still pending confirmation.

This tragic incident has left the local community in shock, and further updates about the investigation and the condition of the injured are anticipated. The local authorities are actively engaged in providing assistance and addressing the repercussions of this unfortunate event.
