Kolkata Warehouse Tragedy: Death Toll Rises to Nine, PM Announces Ex-Gratia

The CSR Journal Magazine

The death toll from the collapse of an under-construction godown in Kolkata’s Taratala area has reached nine, with 20 individuals reported injured, according to Kolkata Police. The incident occurred on Wednesday at a private facility located near Brace Bridge, prompting an extensive multi-agency rescue operation. Those injured have been admitted to nearby hospitals for treatment, where some are said to be in critical condition.

Government Response And Financial Assistance

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh for each of the families of the deceased. Additionally, the 20 people who sustained injuries will receive Rs 50,000 from the central government, as confirmed by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). This financial assistance aims to alleviate some of the immediate hardships faced by the affected families.

Authorities have acted swiftly, arresting three individuals linked to the incident, including building supervisor Saiyad Md Gulzar and two labour suppliers, Md Ataul and Subhash Chowdhury. Following these arrests, the West Bengal government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh has made statements suggesting potential political connections to the incident, alleging that significant figures might be involved. He indicated that a comprehensive inquiry would be conducted to identify any corruption and hold accountable those responsible for the mishap. Ghosh stated that no individuals, regardless of their political status, would be exempt from scrutiny.

Demographics Of The Workers Involved

West Bengal Health Minister Sharadwat Mukherjee remarked that a majority of the workforce at the site, approximately 90 to 95 per cent, were from Bihar and had only recently arrived in Kolkata. This influx of workers highlights the reliance on migrant labour in construction projects in the region.

Initial investigations have suggested irregularities regarding the sanctioned construction plan. According to West Bengal minister Aroop Biswas, the project plan received approval on January 17, 2026. Further complexities arise with the land ownership, which is reportedly under the Shambhunath Behera partnership registered with the State Maritime and Port Authority (SMPA).

Inquiries are focusing on whether the construction was conducted in adherence to the approved plans, as preliminary information indicates deviations from the original proposals. The consequences of these irregularities may lead to stricter regulations within the construction sector to prevent future incidents.

Ongoing Investigations And Future Actions

The establishment of the SIT showcases the government’s commitment to addressing the situation transparently. Headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Joysurja Mukherjee, the team is tasked with uncovering any negligence that may have contributed to the collapse and ensuring that those responsible are held accountable.

As investigations unfold, further details are anticipated to shed light on the exact causes of the incident and any culpability that may exist. The community remains concerned, and the government is under pressure to enhance safety measures in future construction projects to prevent a recurrence of such tragedies.

The tragedy has ignited discussions about construction practices and the treatment of labourers, as calls for reform in the sector grow louder. Officials have urged that lessons must be learned from this incident to safeguard the lives of workers and ensure public safety in urban development initiatives.
