Volatile Midnight Confrontations Grip Jadavpur University Campus as Political Rivalries Boil Over

The CSR Journal Magazine

High tension gripped the Jadavpur University campus after violent clashes broke out between opposing student factions during the late hours of Wednesday night. In response to the escalating situation, heavy police forces were stationed around the campus gates on Thursday morning to prevent further unrest. Multiple students sustained injuries during the altercations, prompting opposing political wings to announce protest demonstrations outside the university premises.

Dispute Over Union Meeting Escalates into Clashes

The unrest reportedly began during a General Body meeting organized by the engineering department. Arguments broke out between members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), which controls the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union (FETSU). The confrontation rapidly spiraled out of control as members of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) became involved. Allegations emerged that ABVP leader Nikhil Das was among those assaulted during the chaos.

Political Leaders Intervene Amid Safety Concerns

Local BJP MLA Sharvari Mukherjee visited KPC Medical College to check on the injured students. Following reports that external groups had breached the university grounds, left-leaning student activists locked themselves inside Arvind Bhavan, the main administrative building, to secure the premises. Mukherjee demanded that the accused SFI members surrender to the police. In response, SFI General Secretary Srijan Bhattacharya rejected claims of initial involvement, accused political opponents of orchestrating vandalism, and challenged authorities to hold official student union elections.

Protest Rallies Announced Outside University Campus

To express their opposition, both SFI and ABVP called for protest rallies outside the Jadavpur University campus. The ABVP scheduled its demonstration march from Golpark, while the SFI planned its protest starting from the nearby 8B Bus Stand.
