The Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh, Meenu Singh, has urged the public not to panic as concerns grow over an increase in COVID-19 and H1N1 (Swine Flu) cases in Uttarakhand. Singh stated on Monday that the hospital is well-equipped to handle the current situation.

Cases and Preparedness

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Singh reported that in the past month, approximately 20 to 25 individuals tested positive for COVID-19 at AIIMS Rishikesh. Among these, two severe cases required intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Singh elaborated, “The two patients in question were indeed more severe cases. One had diabetes and pneumonia but has since recovered and been discharged.”

The second patient, she noted, also had existing health conditions and did not survive. “Out of the roughly 30 patients who visited, one passed away and one required ICU admission, while the rest had relatively minor issues,” Singh explained.

Enhanced Precautionary Measures

In light of government alerts regarding the potential for co-infections of COVID-19 and H1N1, Singh mentioned the hospital’s proactive steps. “Given the current concerns, we are taking additional precautions,” she stated. The hospital has resumed its outpatient department (OPD) screening, where individuals presenting with fever or cough are tested for both COVID-19 and H1N1.

“Previously, swine flu testing was not conducted for all patients. We have now reinitiated the OPD screening, similar to the measures taken during the height of the pandemic,” Singh added.

Treatment Approach

Regarding treatment protocols, Singh highlighted the availability of specific antiviral medication for swine flu, such as Oseltamivir (Tamiflu), while indicating that COVID-19 management primarily involves supportive care. “There is a specific treatment for swine flu, but COVID-19 doesn’t have a singular cure, so we mainly rely on supportive care,” she noted.

Current Trends and Recommendations

Singh emphasised that the existing scenario does not suggest a significant resurgence of infections. She described the new cases as sporadic and indicated that they reflect small outbreaks rather than a widespread pandemic. “At present, the situation does not indicate a major surge, so there is no need for public alarm. We are seeing isolated cases, akin to earlier reports from Odisha and Andhra Pradesh,” she said.

She reassured the public of the hospital’s readiness to manage any developments. “We have the resources and protocols in place to provide effective treatment,” Singh affirmed.

Public Health Advisory

Singh encouraged individuals, particularly those with pre-existing conditions, to remain vigilant by wearing masks in crowded environments. “It is essential for those visiting public places, especially with underlying health issues, to wear a mask,” she said. She also stressed the importance of regular handwashing for preventing the spread of infection.

Moreover, Singh recommended that anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever or cough seek immediate medical attention. “If you develop a fever or worsening symptoms, please come to the hospital. Testing and appropriate treatment will be provided,” she advised.

In a related national context, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) issued a public health advisory on August 26, addressing the seasonal increase in H1N1. The advisory highlighted that India is witnessing a rise in cases, particularly in metropolitan areas, and urged the public to seek medical assistance rather than self-medicate.

The IMA noted that the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed the circulating virus is the seasonal influenza A (H1N1) without any new genetic mutations.
