Karnataka High Court Denies Urgent Hearing on Ranveer Singh’s Plea in Kantara Daiva Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Karnataka High Court has turned down an urgent hearing request made by actor Ranveer Singh regarding the Kantara Daiva case. The court ruled that the actor, despite his celebrity status, could not receive preferential treatment in this matter. As a result, the hearing has been scheduled for February 24.

Background of the Case

Ranveer Singh approached the High Court to seek the dismissal of criminal proceedings initiated against him following allegations that he had offended religious sentiments. The complaint arises from an incident during the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) held in Goa last year, where Singh appeared on stage alongside Kannada actor and filmmaker Rishab Shetty.

During the event, Singh praised Shetty’s performance in the film Kantara: Chapter 1. However, he reportedly mimicked expressions related to the character Panjurli/Guliga Daiva, which Shetty seemed hesitant about. The complainant contends that this imitation disrespected a revered tradition associated with the daiva.

Legal Proceedings Initiated

The private complaint was filed by advocate Prashanth Methal at the 1st Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court. Following this, the court directed local police to investigate the matter, which led to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against Singh. The FIR cites various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 196, 299, and 302, addressing the promotion of enmity and deliberate actions intended to outrage religious feelings.

Further Allegations Against the Actor

The complainant also alleged that Singh referred to Chavundi Daiva as a “female ghost,” suggesting that the actor should have recognized his global impact and the potential for his comments to offend religious devotees.

During the proceedings, Singh’s legal representation presented the case before a bench led by Justice M Nagaprasanna. They sought early consideration and informed the court that police had already served two notices to the actor. The petition additionally requests interim relief by way of a stay on all further proceedings related to the case.</h4
