Karan Johar Reflects on 10 Years of ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’ and Its Themes

The CSR Journal Magazine

Karan Johar has commemorated the tenth anniversary of his film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil with a heartfelt message, exploring the themes of unrequited love that permeate the narrative. He acknowledged the imperfections in the film, which features performances by Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Fawad Khan, and noted the divided opinions it received, particularly regarding its concluding segment. Despite this, Johar expressed that he would still choose to tell the same story today.

Personal Experiences Shaping the Narrative

In a video shared to mark the film’s anniversary, Johar discussed how his own encounters with love, longing, and heartbreak influenced the creation of the 2016 romantic drama. He described Ae Dil Hai Mushkil as a deeply personal project, reflecting various aspects of his journey in love and the heartaches he has faced. His note highlighted the notion that one-sided love should not solely be viewed through a lens of sorrow or pity.

Johar articulated that the essence of the film lies in understanding unreciprocated feelings for their emotional significance, rather than judging them based on whether they are returned. He stated, “At possibly one of the most vulnerable moments of my life, I realised that one-sided love did not need remorse or sympathy; it didn’t warrant pain or empathy. All it needed was deep and intense understanding.”

He further elaborated on the concept of selflessness in love, asserting that genuine affection should not be contingent upon receiving the same feelings in return. “Loving someone has to be an act of selflessness,” he remarked, emphasising that true love resides in the act of giving without expectation.

Addressing Criticism and Artistic Expression

While Johar holds the film close to his heart, he acknowledged the criticism it faced, particularly concerning its third act. He candidly admitted that the film was not without its flaws and that it garnered mixed reactions. Nonetheless, he maintained that he would not alter his approach to storytelling, stating, “I do admit that it wasn’t without its flaws… BUT truth be told, I would have still told it the same way even today.”

Johar defended the importance of artistic freedom, asserting that no piece of art can achieve perfection. He welcomed diverse interpretations from audiences but emphasised that conviction should take precedence in storytelling. “No art can be perfect and all interpretation is welcome but conviction has to trump all logic and sensibility when you want to be an unabashed storyteller,” he noted.

In his message, Johar expressed gratitude to the cast and crew, particularly acknowledging the contributions of Kapoor, Sharma, Rai Bachchan, and Khan. He thanked them for their trust in his vision and for their performances, which he felt created the right atmosphere on set.

Gratitude for Audience Connection

Concluding his note, Johar returned to the film’s central theme, reiterating the significance of one-sided love as the core of the narrative. He expressed appreciation for the audience’s continued connection with the film over the past decade. “Ten years ago, we told a story about unrequited love… the love we have towards all the lovers of our love story is unconditional,” he stated, conveying his heartfelt sentiments to fans.

He ended his message with a poignant line, “Accha chalta hoon duaon mein yaad rakhna,” encapsulating his affection for the audience. Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, released in 2016, delves into the complexities of unreciprocated love and relationships, with Kapoor portraying Ayan, an aspiring singer, and Sharma as Alizeh, his love interest. The film has sparked discussions regarding its portrayal of relationships and its conclusion, remaining a significant work in Johar’s filmography.
