Kanpur Man Drugged, Killed by Wife & her Lover; Skeleton Found Buried 10 Months Later

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a chilling case from Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, police have arrested a woman and her nephew, allegedly her lover, for the murder of her husband, nearly 10 months after the crime. The skeletal remains of the victim, Shivbeer Singh (50), were exhumed from the backyard of his own home on September 7, 2025.

Wife’s False Claim Raised Suspicions

The victim’s wife, Lakshmi, had told neighbors and family that Shivbeer had gone to Gujarat for work. However, his prolonged absence and switched-off phone raised doubts, especially in the mind of his mother, Savitri Devi, who eventually lodged a missing persons report on August 19.

According to neighbors, frequent arguments had erupted between Shivbeer and Lakshmi after he discovered her alleged affair with her nephew, Amit Singh. Police later confirmed numerous phone calls exchanged between Lakshmi and Amit, further supporting the suspicion of an ongoing relationship.

Murder Planned and Executed Ruthlessly

During police interrogation, Lakshmi and Amit confessed to the killing. Lakshmi reportedly sedated her husband by mixing narcotics in his tea. When he was unconscious, Amit attacked him with a pickaxe. As signs of life remained, Lakshmi allegedly struck him again, ensuring his death.

“The victim was identified through his personal belongings,” the additional DCP said.

Skeletal Remains Found in Backyard

Following the confession, police excavated the backyard of their house and discovered skeletal remains, along with a vest and a locket. These personal items were identified by the victim’s family as belonging to Shivbeer Singh. The remains had been buried for nearly 10 months.

“Initially, they tried their best to mislead the probe, but later, during intensive interrogation, they confessed to their crime.” Lakshmi first sedated Shivbeer with a narcotic-laced tea, and later Amit Singh hacked the 50-year-old man to death with a pickaxe, Assistant Commissioner of Police Panki Shikhar said.

“When signs of life persisted, Lakshmi allegedly hit him further, leading to Shivbeer’s death,” Shikhar said.

Previous Cases Echo Similar Patterns

This case is reminiscent of other gruesome spousal murders in Uttar Pradesh. One such incident involved a merchant navy officer in Meerut, whose body was stuffed in a blue drum by his wife and her lover. Such crimes have shocked the public and law enforcement alike.

Lakshmi and Amit were arrested on September 7, a day after being detained for questioning. Authorities say further investigation is ongoing to uncover more details and establish a watertight case against the duo.
