Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda recently conducted a review of the preparations for the upcoming NEET UG Counselling 2026. This meeting aimed to reaffirm the government’s dedication to ensuring a transparent, merit-based, technology-enabled, and student-friendly admission procedure for undergraduate medical courses throughout India.

During the review, Nadda assessed the readiness of various stakeholders involved in the counselling process, including the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Key focus areas included the counselling schedule, IT infrastructure, and mechanisms for grievance redressal to enhance the overall experience for candidates.

The Minister highlighted the need for a fair and transparent counselling process, instructing officials to maintain strong technical support throughout the admission cycle. He also underscored the importance of timely responses to candidates’ concerns, ensuring a seamless and efficient functioning of the counselling portal.

Introduction of Technology-Enabled Reforms

The NEET UG Counselling 2026 will feature significant reforms aimed at improving accessibility and clarity in the admission process. One notable change is the introduction of a one-time physical reporting system, which is designed to minimise candidates’ need for multiple visits to the counselling centre.

Upon seat allotment, candidates will have the option to express their willingness online through either the Freeze or Float options. Those who choose the Freeze option will need to report to their designated institute within a specified timeline to complete admission requirements, including document verification and fee payment. Conversely, candidates opting for the Float option will be able to fulfil admission formalities online without having to report physically, retaining provisional admission while still eligible for subsequent counselling rounds.

This upgradation facility will be available until the third round of counselling. After this period, students holding seats will be required to report in person to complete essential procedures, including payment and verification of original documents.

Enhancements in Accessibility and Support Measures

The new framework introduced for this year’s counselling process is designed to streamline operations by ensuring a single instance of physical reporting, document verification, and fee payment. This approach aims to lessen unnecessary travel for candidates and simplify the overall admission process.

Another key feature is the online resignation facility, which will allow candidates, under specific conditions, to resign from their allotted seats via the MCC Counselling Portal without needing to visit their assigned institute unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Furthermore, the review underscored measures aimed at bolstering transparency and efficiency, using pre-populated data from the National Testing Agency (NTA) for document verification and validating the seat matrix through the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Special attention has been given to improving accessibility for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), with the number of designated assessment centres expanding from 16 to 61 nationwide. Nadda was also updated on comprehensive cybersecurity preparedness efforts, conducted in partnership with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), to safeguard the counselling process.

In addition, a dedicated 24×7 toll-free call centre has been established to assist candidates, alongside the availability of bilingual informational resources and a grievance redressal mechanism via email. The National Testing Agency announced the NEET (UG) 2026 results on 16 July 2026, with the counselling process for All India Quota seats in MBBS, BDS, and B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing expected to commence shortly.
