Janhvi Kapoor Discusses Struggles with Depression After Dhadak

The CSR Journal Magazine

Janhvi Kapoor recently spoke about her difficult entry into Bollywood, highlighting her struggles with depression following the release of her debut film, Dhadak. The film was released in 2018, shortly after the passing of her mother, Sridevi, a circumstance that made her debut particularly poignant.

During a podcast with Raj Shamani, Janhvi reflected on her experience around the release, asserting that the external perception of her success did not mirror her internal feelings. “Every time anyone talks to me about my first film, Dhadak, they say, ‘she was so good in it’ or ‘we loved Dhadak’. But my memory of Dhadak was very different,” she stated, expressing a sense of emotional disconnect despite the film’s acclaim.

Impact of Loss and Reassurance

Janhvi shared that she relied heavily on her mother for validation and reassurance prior to her passing. After losing her, she sought acceptance from the public, which led to unrealistic expectations of universal admiration. “I thought ho gaya and that packup hogaya,” she remarked, revealing her belief that audiences disliked her despite the film’s commercial success.

She acknowledged that while Dhadak was one of the most commercially successful films featuring newcomers at the time, her focus remained on the negative feedback. This fixation on criticism overshadowed her ability to appreciate the film’s achievements, contributing to her feelings of inadequacy.

Janhvi further elaborated on her mindset during this period, admitting that she struggled to distinguish between criticism and praise. She felt undeserving of her opportunities in the film industry, constantly questioning her worth as an actor.

Reflections on Industry Pressure and Success

In a separate conversation on the B4U Hear It Here podcast, Janhvi conveyed her feelings of unworthiness, especially regarding her roles in Dhadak and Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl. She stated that the pressures associated with her family background made her believe she had not truly earned her place in the industry.

“I have been made to feel that I got everything on a platter which means that I am technically worthless,” Janhvi said. Despite acknowledging the privileges that came from her family’s legacy, she expressed a deep love for acting, emphasising that this passion fuels her career.

Current and Future Projects

Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar, Dhadak was a remake of the highly regarded Marathi film Sairat, and it managed to earn over 110 crore at the box office. However, Janhvi’s internal struggles overshadowed this milestone.

Since her debut, Janhvi has participated in various films, such as Gunjan Saxena, Ghost Stories, Roohi, and Good Luck Jerry. She was recently featured in the romantic comedy, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, which co-starred Varun Dhawan, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf.

Looking ahead, Janhvi Kapoor is set to appear in the upcoming Telugu film, Peddi, alongside Ram Charan, which is scheduled for release later this year, indicating her ongoing commitment to the film industry despite past challenges.
